Soundness

Post by The Steward »

Soundness was first introduced to the game way back in the Old SIM, and quickly became one of the most important parts of the game. A sound horse could run more often, while an unsound horse was more susceptible to injury if overworked. Soundness was turned off when the SIM returned, but has continued to be bred into generations of horses. Now it is simply turned back on again. To check your horse’s soundness, just visit the vet and click on ‘Ask About Soundness.'

Levels of Soundness
There are four levels of soundness: Very sound, sound, unsound, very unsound.

Racing Soundness
A very sound horse recovers from exercise and racing more quickly. A sound horse can usually squeeze in a typical 7 races in a year. An unsound horse is best with 6-7, while a very unsound horse needs to be handled with more care.

Breeding for Soundness
When foals are born, it can inherit the trait of either parent. Thus, if you breed a mare that was very sound to a very unsound stallion, you can get anything on the spectrum. But if your very sound mare goes to a very sound stallion, your foal can only be very sound.

A Real Example
Why wouldn’t you just breed to a very sound horse every time? Unsound horses are sometimes brilliantly fast and special animals, for instance, Sun Raider and son Maelstrom are both listed at “unsound” and have been breeding generations of unsoundness into the breed.

Series Races
Horses that are competing in Triple Crown-type series are protected from injury while they run in multiple legs of the series. For instance, when a horse is running in the American Triple Crown, Harness Triple Crowns, Canadian Triple Crown, or Two Year Old Turf Triple, the horse will not be injured during those races, but once the series is over, any horse is at a higher risk of injury until they have fully recovered.
