Week 11 Grade 1's - AWR

Post by Garret Folsom »

There were 3 G1's on tap last night. I saw a couple of cool things, that I wanted to share.

I'll start with hyping my own horse. Franzia won the 8th Annual Four A.M. Miracle Stakes. It broke a 5 year stretch where the winner was sired by Thermodynamic. It was Franzia's 7th G1 win, Sire - Danon Premium now has 9 G1 wins as a sire in the AW Route division. Dam Sire - D's Tapeta has 7 G1 wins as a Dam Sire. It was my 16th G1 win in the Division breaking a tie with the great Ara Davies for 3rd All-time. Also, by winning the race and defeating Order Restored, Franzia has regained the AW Route World Heavyweight Championship! His first defense will be Week 13, Day 5 in the Plastics Classic.

Winning the Synthetic Derby was Freak Out for Ronnie Dee. He's sired by No Luck Needed, who is tremendously undervalued in my opinion, and an amazing bargain at $7,285. This is not only No Luck Needed's first G1 winner, but his first Stakes winner (only has 12 racers - oldest being 3YO's). The win is Dam Sire - Wizarding War's second G1 winner (as a Dam Sire). The other being White Teeth Please in year 52. The win is Ronnie Dee's 3rd AW Route G1 win, first since No Luck Needed won the Steward's Cup Synthetic Marathon in Y53.

The Synthetic Oaks winner was Corrupt. Owner/Breeder Louise Bayou's filly picked up her first AW Route G1 win and Louise's first AW Route G1 since Trahan won the Plastics Classic in Year 44. It's Bay's 6th AW Route G1 win, putting her in a 4-way tie for 15th place all-time (Tied with Bryan Price, Kasie Gillespie and Lee Cara). Corrupt is sired by D's Tapeta, who has sired 7 different G1 winners that have accumulated 13 G1 wins. The win makes Corrupt the 1st AW Route G1 winner for Dam Sire Pioneerof the Nile.

There you have it. No Luck Needed should be used more and if you have a Pioneerof the Nile mare, try her out with an AW horse!!!

Some trivia about my 3 Grade 1 AW wins:
0. All were by home-breds.
1. Freak Out made his debut as a 3YO in Week 4 of Year 56 (after a BT in Week 2).
2. No Luck Needed won the Steward's Cup Synthetic Marathon in Year 53 off a 5-week layoff.
3. Louisville Palace won the Synthetic (All Weather) Oaks way back in Year 34 -- so 22 years between my Oaks and Derby wins.
