Cut Bait and Geld?

Post by Lily Wilkins »

Okay guys. I have this colt: https://www.simhorseracing.com/horse.ph ... ID=1017566
He is an "Allowance" galloper. BUT hear me out...
He is a maternal half brother to champion Drunken Marauder, and is by Tls Pegasus. He has the pedigree of a horse who could improve and turn into a monster, in my opinion. He probably would have seen the scissors of doom WAY sooner, except I read a thing a while back where The Steward happened to say he looked "nice"
Yea, if the Steward calls a colt in my barn "nice", I am going to think VERY hard before I geld him... After all, what if he spontaneously turns into the freak of my dreams and he has no balls?! You see my dilemma.
It was recently stated that gelding horses now gives them an even bigger boost than before, so should I just cut bait and snip this guy?

I prefer people waiting until the horse is 4 and not showing improvement before gelding (my own personal recommendation), but after W9 of the 3yo year is also a pretty good indicator of DUDE. YOU NEED TO GET GOING.

He is nice though ;-) ;-)

I have one similar I just can’t give up on. Going to keep trucking along. Hopefully he gets 350k and then possibly he turns out at stud.

That wink wink is a pretty good indicator not to geld lol

I have this allowance Arabian who has been plodding along, I don’t think he wants to hit 350 though

Hey Em, my colt wanted me to tell you "thank you" for him, as I've decided to keep the scissors away for a while longer

It was more meant to be an indicator of me being obnoxious, ha.

I do like him, but I place different value on horses.... on paper to me they seem like one thing, and players at large can disagree.

At any rate he'll be fun to mess around with more, and we'll see what happens.

If you want to wait, I'd put him away till Y54 and bring back in a 4yo & up maiden. He's just going to get beaten up by freaks and stakes right now.
I also have Tls Pegasus colt (although he's a freak) that I have had high hopes for, that seems to go out of his way to be totally frustrating. I wish I had your patience, if he wasn't already a freak he'd have been gelded a long time ago.

That is a great option too! My freak STBP didn’t really get his freakish on until he was 4 https://www.simhorseracing.com/horse.php?HorseID=951580

Yeah that is a good idea! I think I will just shelf him until he's 4. I might as well stop destroying his confidence by getting him beaten over and over.
Also... I am NOT patient  I just happen to have been pretty inactive recently, so it was easy to not pay much attention to him. Now that I'm reviving my stable, though, I am like "okay dude, WHAT are you doing?!"

Lily - Decide what your priorities are and take action from there. What's more important to you? A return on your investment, or possibly being "surprised" later on down the road?

If this were my colt, I personally wouldn't hesitate a second to snip him. I only say this as an owner with a stable FULL of mediocre allowance SB's. I know trotters, and I fear P Woodford simply isn't breeding stock. He's almost 4 and only banked less than $5k so far, and hasn't raced faster than an 84 in doing so. The trotter division is horribly competitive these days. Speed figs in the 90's used to guarantee you stakes wins not too long ago. Now a 93 may barely win the $45k weekly claimer in Australia! That's the reality of the game right now...it's not a bad thing, just something we choose to deal with if we race SB's.

Not trying to be a knowitall, but to me, your best chance of returning a profit with P Woodford is to give him every speed advantage you can. That means keeping fit...appropriate race selections...and yes, even gelding him. JMHO.

Peace and hippy grease...Troy
