Effects on Broodmare comments??

Post by Erin Erskine »

What exactly effects what broodmare comment a mare will get?

Does their gallop comment effect it, or is it based majority on bloodlines/genetics?
Can a Claimer/Solid runner ever be a decent broodmare??

Maybe someone else can more directly answer your question?

But the article above is invaluable to anyone interested in breeding!

My understanding (which I make no guarantee is correct) is that racing ability doesn't directly affect broodmare ability but as both are going to be influenced by pedigree they are often similar. So if you had a really beautifully bred horse that was a dud on the track there is a chance they could still be a nice broodmare, but the odds of a poorly bred, poor galloping horse of going on to become a good broodmare is not that high

All horses are born with a race rating and a breeding rating. Whilst the race rating can go up or down, the breeding rating doesn't change. So in essence, once the horse is born, it's breeding ability is set and no matter how you race it, it won't change.

And yes a well-bred filly has a much higher chance of becoming a very good broodmare than a filly who raced beyond her pedigree though it's always worth giving them a shot (provided you have the patience and money for it).

Cleo's article defines what it takes to be considered a well bred mare.

I’ve definitely had some luck with Claimer mares. Why Hide was a claimer, as one example. They do tend to be more hit and miss though, in terms of getting good stakes horses.

Oh for sure! My broodmare band has been built up mostly from AJ tossed mares who definitely were not good racehorses. I just bred them to top stallions known for producing broodmares and took their filly and did the same thing.

Since I started the CAM has needed a makeover, so I wouldn’t use your GP on that 😜

Im currently trying to do my end of year sorting lol - trying to decide if Im wasting my time running useless follies if they're never gonna be much to breed
