Mares That Surprised You

Post by Diane Townsend »

I would love to hear about the breeding mares that surprised you. Maybe it was a mare with a mediocre bloodstock comment that produced a superstar or maybe (like me) a Blue Hen from nowhere.
I'm still pretty new to the game but I acquired a mare while I was at Trial Park that had a poor pedigree (she was her sires highest earner with $11K), she managed to win a maiden but I had little hope when I pressed the ask the agent button and almost skipped it, You cannot imagine my shock when she came up Blue Hen!
What mares have you had that have surprised you?
Nigerian Prince (TS)
Race With Lions (TM)
The Womble (TR)
Seismic (TR)
Legendary Dragonet (Chase)
Red Eyed Me (Appy Mid)

This is a formidable mare.

Her best foal was a flat B nick.

I've had slides happen before, but nothing quite that ridiculous
I have a stable full of cats

A "good" broodmare, I bought for 60k, and her best foal was bred on a B- nick. I bought this mare only because I loved her headshot, and bred her to Bright Heart because I loved his headshot. That best foal became my 1st SC winner and legit made my barn.
Superbia --> SC Winning Stud from the My Heart of Hearts dynasty --> 40,000 fee
Quetzalcoatl --> G1 winner, Son of SC winner Luxuria, 20,000 fee
Filled With Pride --> G1 winner, Son of SC winner Superbia, 20,000 fee

I can’t think of any specific examples, but I love when I pick up a mare who’s only produced claimers and solids and stuff, and then she starts producing Allowance babies. Makes me feel like I might not be completely clueless lol

Humorous Lady

Purchased for $18,000 and spent $7,500 to breed her. The result was Jabberwocky. I loved the classic lines in the pedigree and was shocked when the Steward told me he was a monster...he initially galloped wings! (now would be listed as productive). At the time he was a 3 year old who had just won his first stake. I’m not sure when his gallop changed, but it was quite the trip campaigning him!

This mare surprised me. https://www.simhorseracing.com/horse.php?HorseID=774268
Star BM I bred to DR several times with nada. Then bred her to RL sires. To date she has produced 2 Freaks of the DM kind. I was on the verge of pensioning her.

And this this mare. https://www.simhorseracing.com/horse.php?HorseID=339113
Formidable BM that produced this mare: https://www.simhorseracing.com/horse.php?HorseID=651514. To date, Sweet Sinsation has produced 6 Freaks.

To be honest, over the years, some of my best runners were out of Formidable mares. It goes to show you, you just never know!

And it teaches me that most deserve a chance, a mare has to be pretty bad before I AJ it.

Not mine, but Ara Davies had Alix Von Hessen and she was listed as ‘good’!

I’m sure most you are tired of hearing about this one, but looking at her page you would think she was a blue hen who hypoed A’s. Well she was a formidable who hypoed B with everyone apart from Reddington (B+, and that filly turned out to be a freak). She produced 3 Freaks and 5 Stakes and has produced 7 Grade 1 winners and 6 millionaires (and a couple multi millionaires to which she could still add).

Another mare from the same family who produced a surprise was this one who popped out the ‘freak’ King of Ashes. She was also just a formidable but I guess being a sister to the above mare, she always had the potential to be really good.
