Forgive me because I’m a big dummy, but what exactly does the median represent in the SIM? Like how is it calculated? Because I can’t figure it out, then again I did fail a maths exam once so no surprise there I guess.

Re: Stud Book Update
Median is normally the middle number in a list of numbers. So if you took all of the earnings from a stallion's raced progeny and put them in order from lowest to highest which number is in the middle. It similar to average is trying to get an idea of the central point but unlike average is less influenced by outlighers on the high end.
So case in point lets say a horse has three offspring won has 10k in earnings, one 20k and one 4 million. The median would be 20k the average would be $1.3 million so that one 4 million really pulled it up whereas most offspring were not earning that sort of money.
Looking at my stallions you really see the difference in thoroughbreds rather than mixers (not surprising given thoroughbreds have higher purses). My one thoroughbred sire has average progeny earnings over 3.5x his median progeny earnings by comparison my paint averages are 0.5 - 0.8x more.
This should nicely help get around the issue of a stallion's stats being biased by number of stewardbred he has which will definitely pull up averages and gallop percents but medians should be more based on a majority of horses (which will be playerbreds) than a few outliers. Again looking at my own studs I find it interesting that Peacful who I always thought was underrated has a higher median earnings than Red Ferns despite having an an average progeny earning that was 1/2 RFs.

Re: Stud Book Update
Hey Carole, a median is the mid-point of a set of numbers. In this case, they take a stud, take every offspring of that stud and find the mid-point in terms of earnings. It differs from an average which is the total earnings divided by the number of progeny.Carole Hanson wrote: ↑3 years ago Forgive me because I’m a big dummy, but what exactly does the median represent in the SIM? As an example say you had 5 horses and they had earnings of 1,2,3,9 and 15. The median is 3. The average is 6.
It is useful because it gives you a better idea of what a middle of the road progeny from a sire is likely to earn, free from the inflating effects of one or two super succesful progeny has on an average.
LOL Tammy beat me by 45 seconds, well done!
