If you suspect a breeding not working out is the result of an unlucky slide, do you try again?

Would you re-try a stud?

Post by Ren Marston »

To elaborate more on the question:

If you breed two horses that make complete sense genetically, as in a proven mix of a bloodlines that you feel should work out to get an allowance or higher, but it results in not that do you try the combination again to see if perhaps it was an unlucky slide as you may suspect? As a new player I've been told that its really not a trend to repeat stallions very much, but I wonder if a breeding makes sense and the result does not is it worth it to give it another go? Thanks!

I have a mare who only hypos A- with one stallion, the rest is B+.
So I have only bred her to the stallion with the A- hypo, and it has resulted in 2 allowances and one solid.
Aiming for that stakes or better up, freak someday.

A B+ Hypo to a well bred mare is more trustworthy than an A Hypo to one who isn't.

May the 'Slide' be with you!

P.S. Everyone seems to have their own definition on what a well bred mare is?

Interesting question. I'm too new to vote. 😀
But I've experimented for a couple of seasons by sending mares that produced better foals back to the same stallion. And I think I've been disappointed every time. 😅 Hello slide. So that has gotten me thinking about how many of the "bad" combinations that could have worked out the second time. So far I haven't tried again...

If the first foal worked out I would go to a different stud just to mix up my bloodlines but if the first one did not work out and you really like the cross (remember hypos are not everything ) I would do it again and maybe change the gender of the foal

I probably shared this a hundred times. But it really helped me, so I'll do it again:

For me it depends how much I like the cross, and how old the mare is.

I have one mare, I can’t remember who atm, but she ONLY likes the Knock Four Times sireline. I hate sending mares to the same boys over and over but when a mare is picky there isn’t much you can do lol

Edit: I had to find her 😅 even though car internet browsing for more than a min makes me 🤢🤣

Twisted Sister all her K4T line foals are allowance+, with anything else she hasn’t produced better than Productive 🙄

I would. I sent Seasons of Love to James Dean for a stakes colt. When James Dean was about to pension, I decided to send her again. Resulting foals were freak; I will definitely consider sending mares back to stallions again after that incidence. Love Unwavering will probably revisit Kingdom Come next year.
