help me pick a stud

Post by Ren Marston »

so I bought this mare last season for a pretty penny. More Than It Seems is a full sister to Penguin which is awesome, but I'm having trouble deciding on a stud to try her with. Last season after much deliberation I gave her a chance with Mr. Wonderful and she did not produce. So, if she were yours, what stud would you breed her to?

She produced well with allonsy, why not try one of his sons?

I'm not a huge fan of any of his sons; but Metacrisis could be a cool one, sibling through the dam

I would go with War Like Me. He's proving to be quite the stud, it's an "A-" nick, and he might compliment her 1 1/16 preference with his longer tendencies. Plus, it's a 2x4 cross to All That I Am, which could be interesting.
He's booked full currently, but Erin is really good about opening spots up throughout the season.

Edit: Actually, I also love Poet's Corner for her. Full sister Penguin produced well with Blue Bayou, and Poet's Corner is BB's best son. Plus, you would get a gorgeous 3x3 Maryland Million cross in there, and just look at all the epic mares represented in that pedigree.

Slickrock. She’s done well with the Doctor sireline, and I still think he’s criminally underrated.

Ransack gives you 2x4 to All That I Am (both on female side of the parents' pedigrees) and a 3x4 to Maryland Million plus James Dean on top, and he's got multiple G1 winners so he's proven he can produce,

I had similar thoughts. I really like Slickrock (my #2 choice).

But I love Acid Test (Dam Sire: Doctor). I like the Maelstrom "echo" (4x3). More importantly, Acid Test's stud book numbers are better than Slickrock's numbers.

Acid Test is excellent, but I’m also of the option that Slickrock’s numbers are not reflective of his ability as a stud due to Steve having him at a very, very low price for much of his career. He saw many below par mares during that time.
