How Many Gallops

How many gallops does it usually take for a horse to attain full fitness? And how often can we gallop without injuring?

I think it was like 7 gallops in the same day.
Or 17 walk the shrewdow same day.

But since it’s only one a day rest plays in the picture so might be a few more the the numbers I stated above

2 days rest after galloping. Use gallops plus other forms of exercise to obtain full fitness. Will differ from horse to horse. A more conservative and horse friendly approach?

I find it takes *about* 3-5 gallops to get fitness, although I don’t usually jog my horses so take that with a grain of salt lol. As for frequency I like to do every 3-4 days when looking for an equipment piece, and every week to maintain fitness :)

I strongly disagree with this. Like Pete said, when you could do each training more than once a day, you could gallop 7 times in one day and reach full fitness. Adding in the rest you need between gallops nowadays, it takes more than this.

This year, I galloped my yearlings once at the start of the preseason, then every 3 or 4 days in weeks 1, 2 & 3. I jogged them W4D1, hoping they'd all be fit and could have a week off before their first works W5D1. Unfortunately, they all are only "Training Well", not fully fit.

So seven gallops in one day used to work, seven gallops in three weeks doesn't quite. I'm guessing (/hoping) that seven in three gets you close enough that walking the shedrow a few days in a row (or galloping an eighth time) will be enough to get to fully fit.

I strongly agree with this; it's exactly what I do.

My homebred yearlings with 9 gallops are fully fit. My TBS yearlings with 6 are "training well." So somewhere in between?

I find galloping every three days for seven times followed by a jog does the trick usually.

I will say this does vary some depending on a horse's history. A lot of the talk here is about new yearlings that have never done anything. I found that the horses I got from the James Ryan dispersal at the end of the year which had been trained in the past but then had just sat since about week 10 got fit once I started training them when the year turned over much quicker than I expected from my past experience with my yearlings. So if you pick up a horse off the sales page that had been fit but then had been inactive for awhile they probably won't require as much training to return to fitness as a yearling.

Why do you gallop a yearling? I would think you would hurt them?
