Scratch? Assistant trainer warning...

Post by Ma Springs »

I have two new horses that I might have trained too hard in my attempts to get them in shape...

At day 12-6 assistant trainer Mary Weathers says:
"Be careful not to overwork or race too much, or she might get hurt. "

They are both entered in races Monday 13-1.

:?: Do I scratch so they won't be injured?

From what I picked up from Regina Moores fantastic articles in training and avoiding injury, a horse will still be at Level 1 two days after Mary lifts her warning. If that goes for both after race and after training I guess that means I should scratch to be safe..? :|

Update.

Now, less than 48 hours until race, assistant trainer says "ok".

Took one of them to the vet who commented:
"Here is what I found. I don't see anything going on with x's legs right now. This horse should be at it's peak in about five or six days if you don't push it too hard this week Hope the rest of your day goes well!"

Guess I should listen to him.

 Scratched and moved to next week.

If you are regularly racing your horses (every 2 or 3 weeks), don’t train them at all in between. Racing is enough to keep them fit. Also, make sure you ship the horse back to a farm after each race as they recover faster at farms than racetracks.

I would definitely scratch them. Even if they are recovered enough not to get hurt they will likely not run a good race due to the tiredness so it would be a wasted race anyway

Thanks for your comments!
Yes, they're both scratched, seems to be the right thing to do.
Guess I'm just a bit impatient to get started! :P
