Broodmare running ability - any difference?

Post by Ma Springs »

A question about broodmares (for when the time comes...):

If you have three broodmares with the same comment, say 'star mare', one is a productive maiden, one is a stakes ability non stakes winner and the other an allowance ability stakes winner, would you expect any different result in the offspring based on the mares running ability and/or earnings or is the star mare comment the only thing that counts?

The racing number and the breeding number are totally separate and one does not affect the other so no, the way they raced won’t affect their breeding ability.

The only exception is with stallions, if they don’t reach $350,000 in earnings in their career, they will not be able to max out their breeding potential number.

I wrote an article about broodmares. The third section may help with your question:

I had a claimer with a formidable rating produce several stakes winners. That said, class is much more likely to breed class. However, there is generation skip sometimes so the class can be from any mare on the dam side within 3 generations.
