The Morning Line: Topics and Questions Wanted!

Post by Mara Jade Vess »

Hello all, we’re in the midst of planning a podcast episode for new/junior/intermediate players, and we’re curious to hear what questions you all have or topics you would like covered. As of right now, our loose structure looks like this:

• Overview (site map, controls, reading the tables, etc)
• Racing (types of races, divisions, intro to race placement, claiming, etc)
• Training (types of training, workouts, equipment, etc)
• Sales (filters, what to look for, etc)
• Breeding (sires, analyzing female lines, what to research, etc)
• Open Q&A (primarily hosted by Nini and myself)

Please let us know below if there is something specific that you’d like us to talk about or questions you want answered. We can’t make any guarantees that we’ll talk about everything (we do have time constraints after all!) but we will read every comment. We also don't have a specific date on when this episode will be released, so I'll keep this thread updated. Thanks!

I like it. My question. Obviously most running types have a variety of distances in each bracket. Is there an easy way, other than deep number crunching, to find a horses optimum distance. For example, is a TB router better suited for 8.5 f, 9f, 9.5 f, 10 f, and so on. Thanks in advance.

1. Biggest mistake a new player can make when playing the game?

2. What was the best advice you got when you started playing the game?

Q. How to value broodmares? I recently bid $100K on a formidable broodmare (6YO) and it still wasn't enough.

Is it a case of how much you are prepared to spend or do you look at past progeny from that mare, how good of a broodmare sire it is and how many female generations are relevant in a pedigree.

I understand the above may not be relevant to a brand new player, however some like myself are about to enter the wider world of the sim.

i like to ask.

Are ground conditions and soundness of a horse passed on from the sire...dam or both...if at all.

For the selective breeders:

How to you like to cross/match speed and distances? ie. Fast to slow or to fast. Long to short, classic to classic, marathoner to hoon mouse?

How much faster will a horse with a companion animal recover? How often would you race a sound horse with vs without a pet?

I would just like to note that we will also be getting input from other veteran simsters for the questions!

Could talk about the benefits and drawbacks of specializing in breeds/surfaces/distances or just running any and everything...

This podcast idea is so cool!
1.) What are the top 3, out of the box (uncommon) pieces of advice you would give a new player?
2.) What was YOUR (veterans) way to success, how did you get where you are?

We have been told the routers are very competitive, with Dirt route on top and newer players have been adviced to more or less stay away from them. I don't intend to focus on the DR at this point, but I have a couple of Blue hens and Star mares... Is there any point in keeping them and breeding super small scale and maybe shift focus in a couple if years? Or will they only be a money drain..? :)

And related: could you mention something about the smaller vs the bigger stable? Can a smaller stable be competitive (guess we've seen that, hello Kris, Carole and many more..!) or do you have to breed numbers, maybe more so starting out in a division, to get those stakes and freaks in the first place?
