I have a nice horse… now what?

Post by Ali Sills »

Hi all!

When you have a freak or stakes yearling, how do you plan his or her two year old year? Do you start them out in maidens? Jump right to stakes? Which stakes races do you choose? Any pro tips for nice horses?

How are his/her workout times compared to others. A freak is just a gallop type, doesn’t mean they will run like it.

I personally start in maidens 99% of the time. I've seen too many nice horses lose their first stakes, then go on to lose two or three more races and trash their confidence, before they finally win one and get back on track.

I just throw them in and see what happens. Pietro if I would of went by workout times Jeaux would not have started straight into stakes. He was a lazy worker. I also have an appy sprinter ( Whiskey Patient) that has the all time fastest workout for appys at 350 yards that is a pain in my butt freak. I find racing is the only true way to see what they can do.

Jeaux is definitely an exception, not the rule
