Progressives....

Post by Meghan Kingsley »

I'm baffled by some of my horses labeled as progressives. I had hoped they would improve, at least marginally, as they age, but it seems they often get worse. Am I the only one?

For instance, I have a horse that initially did very well in Stakes company as a 2 y.o., but is now struggling in allowances and one would think she would at least have maintained, if not improved. I have others where I've seen no difference or improvement whatsoever. Late Bloomers seem to have a marked change, but progressives do not, at least in my barn. Can anyone with more experience give some insight?

Many of my good (non-Freaks) horses exhibit similar behavior. They quickly break their maiden, win NW2, and win NW3. But then they seem to struggle in NW4 or open Allowance.

My explanation: the horse is still good but the competition is much better in these higher level allowance races.
