Grammar lesson time!
Get out your #2 pencils and know that this is not a judgment of you. Rather I wonder what schools teach these days.
Now I can teach you grammar and punctuation. Just don't ask me any math questions. I cannot count to 20 today because I have shoes on.
Also, look up Weird Al's Word Crimes on YouTube. OK here we go...
The apostrophe (') is only used to indicate two things: possession and missing letters. That's it. See what I did there?
It's vs its.
It's is the contraction for it is. It's pathetic how lousy Dawn is at math.
Its (note lack of apostrophe!!) indicates possession. Every dog has its day.
Oh good lord, who let the Grammar Nerd in? I hear you say. Why thank you, please tell me more about myself. I'm just trying to be helpful m'kay?

Scuze us Miss Dawn, but many of us ain't got much book learnin'.
When math be taught at my school, I was home sick that day!
Seriously though, much of what you say is sadly true.

Grammar nerd? Shouldn't it then be "Oh, good Lord"?

Re: Grammar lesson time!
I know all that stuff...but when I don't...I blame it on lack of sleep and drugs (painkillers)
I type fast and sometimes don't proofread thoroughly...and a few hours later, if I re-read what I typed, I'm shocked at all the mistakes. Usually mine are words spelled correctly - but it's the wrong word. Like 'Sale' and 'Sell' or 'There and their' (I rarely get "they're" mixed up with last those two, though). And I think I'm doing ok with 'Your and "You're'
I know the meanings I just type them out wrong sometimes, it's like my brain is stuck on phonics. lol.
Oh...another one I've done more often I care to admit. Is in typing out 'think' I end up with 'thing' I'm beginning to think the wrinkles in my brain are smoothing out.

Re: Grammar lesson time!
When I was in my teens, the following scene happened a lot...
Phone rings, my mother answers it--it's my brother calling from work
Mom, where's Dawn?
MOM: She's here. What do you need her for?
BROTHER: I need her to spell a word for me
MOM: Why don't you look it up in a dictionary?
BROTHER: Because I don't know to spell it!!
He did have a point.
My mother on the phone to someone (forgot how long ago): I have a son who can't spell cat and a daughter that can't add 2 + 2.
Pretty much.

Re: Grammar lesson time!
My biggest grammar pet peeve is when people use ‘would of had’ rather than ‘would have had’. Ooh or when people say generally instead of genuinely (that’s more of a younger generation thing though).
But of course if English is not someone’s first language, I give them the benefit of the doubt (I say that as if English is my first language ).
Anyone else who responded in this thread read their response in their mind in a very posh voice?

My pet peeve is journalists who can’t spreckin teh engrish. It’s vaguely acceptable for Joe Public to fail at spelling, but a journo AND an editor missing this one particular mistake makes me twitch. This particular error has been spotted in every level of mainstream publication, from local to national. In five years of being employed in racing, it has been spelled REIGN and RAIN but never REIN.

Not to change from the grammar lessons, and I'm showing my age, but it seems none of the young people can write in cursive. Including my two young adult children. To get back to the grammar lesson: It's Y'all, not Ya'll.

Re: Grammar lesson time!
I watched all the episodes of the Andy Griffith Show on Amazon Prime a few years back - I just looked up how many there were... 249 episodes, each a half hour and the series lasted 8 years. In all of them, the closed caption had Opie calling his dad, "Paw" instead of "Pa"
