Note To Self...

Never Buy Clairol, Light Auburn ever ever ever again!

My hair is now a very bright Orange! :ugeek:

I only use half amounts of hair dye because my hair isn't that thick, and too, it's very fine, as far as the hair shafts thickness. Wispy is a good way to describe my hair.

I haven't dyed my hair over a little over a year, and still had 1/2 portion of the usual color I've been using...Clairol, Paint The Town Red. But I thought I might try a lighter shade of red/brown...as that is what my natural color was...which I always thought of an almost light auburn, leaning a little bit more to the brown side of the line.

I've been online reading stuff about how to fix this, one place said that while not recommended, due to damaging the hair...that a person can dye their hair twice in one day...and that 1/2 portion of Clairol Paint The Town Red is looking Really tempting right now...lol.

I've shampooed my hair twice already today, to try to get rid of some of the other dye...and some has some out...even on the towels as I dried my hair...but it's still very orange.

If I was in my 20s...I would probably just rock the look and go with it...but I think it looks kind of silly on a 57 year old woman.

I hate that has happened. My sister dyes her hair, and she always thinks it looks good, but it is always an orangish color. I don't say a word, she is happy with it. I haven't dyed my hair in years. The funny thing is, however, that I have 3 siblings (2 sisters and 1 brother); I am the oldest (62), and I have way less gray hair than any of my siblings. (My brother is 12 years younger than me). I have no idea why, but they hate me for it. Lol.

LMAO.... seriously, I am laughing out loud! That's too funny...and very accurate.

I sometimes actually wish my hair would grey faster...as the grey I am getting in, is a beautiful metallic silver...nothing dull about it. But, what use to be my brownish auburn hair...has faded to a dull, ugly mousy brown. So about 3 or 4 years ago, I started to dye it and went with a red. And I really ended up liking it, because it looks good freshy dyed, but as it faded, I was getting that brownish red color like I use to have.

I'm not horribly upset by this orange. I have a gopher.. I mean a sister... who can run errand for me for a month or two if need be...lol. But hopefully, I can correct this with the red dye that I have left... if not, there are things I can order online or set up a midnight appointment (so no one can see me) with a stylist here in town, and let her fix it and probably laugh at yet another amateur who messed up a home dye.

Darcy, A lot of the times, I ask those around me, my sister, friends, for their absolute honest opinion about the clothes I wear, or like when I dyed my hair red. I also one time dyed it kind of an ash blond. I appreciate their honesty...no one really liked the ash blond coloring...but everyone I met seemed to like the red coloring. If just one person doesn't like it, that's kind of opinion, but if several pitch in and don't...then I figure they are seeing something I'm not, and I reconsider a style, or hair color, etc...

Ryan, thanks for the huge laugh!

I personally think your best bet is going to a salon so they can tone it so it wouldn't be as orange. Because box dyes are a "one size fits all", they have high concentrations, and they do this so that people with darker hair can actually use the product and see a difference. However, combine that with natural, relatively-untouched hair that's light and greying, it's going to be very bright no matter the colour. Re-dying the hair same-day, especially if it's fine, can cause very significant damage (as in, frying and ultimately losing about 25-50% of your hair), which will take months to fix. I know from experience that stylists much prefer if you go right away so they have a base to work with, as opposed to trying to correct it yourself and risk permanently damaging your hair that they can't save.

My latest hair disaster happened 2 weeks ago. After box coloring during Covid I went to Ulta to get it colored as close to my natural color so I could just basically start over. My natural hair is a light brown. As soon as she took the towel off I freaked out (inside of course.lol) because it was basically black. The cut was awesome so I just sat there and didn't say anything. But the next day I went to fix it for a wedding and realized that my roots where the box color had grown out about 1 1/2 inches) was now BLACK and the rest was a tad lighter thanks to the box color. So basically I paid $150 for a cute cut and for the color job to look like it was already 6-8 weeks grown out. I went back and the manager was very nice and booked me to have it fixed.

Sat in the chair and the stylist goes "Well what I can do is put some highlights and that should fix it!". I told her "Uh ma'am that isn't fixing the fact that you colored my hair black and the color looks like its grown out for 6-8weeks". Seriously it was terrible! She was able to take some of the color out but for the price I was not happy and won't be going back anytime soon.

Mara Jade Vess - yeah, I know going to a stylist would be the best bet.... tomorrow I'm going to make some phone calls...but...I am on such a strict financial budget, that I'm not sure I can afford a professional fix. I know prices vary from area to area, but if they want like $75 or more, it's just not going to be doable for me.

I have tried Loreal one time...and this was after not dying my hair for about 5 months. It left my hair dry and stiff for some months, even conditioners didn't help it all that much... I had to be sooo careful about combing my hair out after a shower.

The two Clairol colours :) I've used -- the red, and now this 'light auburn' at least when I washed out the conditioner (supplied with the kit) my hair came out feeling very soft and silky like. And it didn't stink to the high heavens like the Loreal dye did.

If this had been like that Loreal product, I wouldn't even attempt another dye job, just due to how rough and stiff it made my hair.
Past experiences with perms, and knowing the fine shaft type of my hair makes it burn easily...with both the Clairol and Loreal products, I cut 5 minutes off of the standing time. Doing that probably saved my hair with the Loreal product....oh man, it was sooo stiff...not quite burned to the point of breaking, but close! My last perm was in the mid-1990s, by a professional, who I warned that my hair burned easily. She promised me that perms she did, were gentle...and I basically paid her to FRY my hair...it was Terrible!

Louise, sorry you ended up having such a bad dye job done. I watch a lot of Kpop, and the singing idols seem to have their hair dyed about every 2 to 3 months...in really weird colours :) (blue, green, orange..lol) But knowing their hair is black or very dark brown...I read that they have to have their hair bleached between each dye due to the roots, but also to remove all traces of the other dye they had. I don't understand how they are not all bald from it all. Can the black/brown you have be bleached out and then re-dyed to a colour :) you find more acceptable?

So, yesterday... I decided to re-dye my hair. I did so, because my hair was still very soft even after that dye job on Tuesday.

I mixed up that 1/2 portion of red that I had...and with a deep breath...applied it to my orange hair.

What I have now... I can live with...but it's still a pretty intense color. It turned out a deep rich copper red...rather than the deep dark red I usually get from that color. At least it's not a totally bright Orange.

My sister is not one to hem or haa in telling me if something looks bad... she came over and took a look and said she thought it looked nice...really different on me, as far as a hair color, but it worked. However...she suggested, darken up my eyebrows a bit...as I usually do when I've dyed my hair red. I will just use the same eye shadow...a reddish dark tan color...that I used when my hair was red. It actually works better than an eye brow pencil...just a light touch and it's done. My eye brows are so pale, it doesn't take much to darken them....and I always found an eye brow pencil to bee too much anyways.

Anyway...I feel like I can at least go downtown now and not look like a lit up tangerine..lol. And my hair came out very soft again...so it's not burned by those two treatments so close together.

I dye mine red which always comes out dark auburn because 1) I have ethic hair and 2) my base color is almost black. But I somehow grabbed the wrong thing once and wound up with orange stripes where all the gray is. So I feel you! I haven’t had solid orange but I can tell you that tiger is not a good look!

My younger sister is a natural (and beautiful) blond. My oldest sister has natural brown hair that she dyes blond.

The first time I dyed my hear 3 years or so ago, my oldest sister was in town, and she and my younger sister were together when I surprised them with my red hair.

My oldest sister says, "Why didn't you dye it blond ... then we would all match! "
I replied, "I didn't want to lose any IQ points by going blond" LOL
I get called a 'smartazz' quite often, lol.

I've always liked red heads too... I think a lot of them are attractive...and I have blue eyes and white skin, so it looks good on me...the red, also makes my blue eyes really look even more vivid. I have that pretty shade of blue eyes like Paul Newman's
I've had people ask me in the past if I wore colored contacts.

After saying what I did about the blonds...lol... and in reading stuff on the internet... I have a feeling that as this red washes out, it might turn orange again...and all suggestions say to hide the orange one needs to go to a light ash...ash-blond hair dye.
I'm not sure if I want to go so light of a color...but I might have to until all suggestion of of the orange is gone from my hair.
