Meatloaf is dead : (

Post by Stormy Peak »

This one really makes me sad. : ( He was one of my favorite singers.

When Bat Out of Hell came out in 1977, I bought the LP and I think I wore that record down to the thinness of a piece of paper because I played it so often. I loved the power of his voice that worked so well with Jim Steinman's lyrics and music in that rock opera album.

My two favorite songs from the album are:

Hot Summer Nights (You Took The Words Right Out of my Mouth)
The intro, is humorous....and the song is one a person can just sink into and get lost in as far as the music and the vocals, the lyrics are great too.

Hot Summer Night

And the power ballad Two Out of Three Ain't Bad...

I love the descriptions in this song...such as...him telling his lover that he cannot stay with her, that she cannot expect him to fall in love with her, because he doesn't have that in him to do.

"You'll never find your gold on a sandy beach
You'll never drill for oil on a city street
I know you're looking for a ruby in a mountain of rocks
But there ain't no Coup de Ville hiding at the bottom
Of a Cracker Jack box"

Two Out of Three Ain't Bad

I think what I loved about this album other than Meatloaf's voice, was all the wonderful piano work in all the songs.

Meatloaf's real name was Michael Lee Aday, he was 74 years old.
He was in the entertainment business for six decades, he sold over 100 million albums world wide during his career and he was in 65 movies, including Fight Club, Focus, Rocky Horror Picture Show and Wayne's World...etc.

A sad day indeed. One of the few entertainers I never saw live, they say his concerts were extremely theatrical. My loss. RIP sir.

I grew up with four cassettes in our old Toyota Tercel in the early 90s. One of them was Bat Out of Hell II. I knew every lyric off by heart by the time I was 10 (to my mom's chagrin.)

Age wise Meatloaf and I are peers so by 1977 I was just married for the second time (still married to that sweet woman) and we both found Bat Out of Hell at super fun listen. By 2003 we were band parents for our two girls high school marching band. The band parents did fundraising by working the concessions at our large outdoor concert venue, The PNC Bank Art Center. We got about 10% of the profit for our stand plus tips and with beer being sold the tips were quite generous. We could never see the stage from any of the stands (we could hear everything though) but all the stands closed early for cleanup and sober up so we'd catch the last half hour of the shows. In August of 2003 Meatloaf played there and we got down to an open pair of seats just in time for Bat Out of Hell. Meatloaf was sweaty and drained but that certainly didn't diminish him providing an enthusiastic performance of that song. Such an energetic performer and a fun memory.

The best music is now in heaven.... Meatloaf and Jim Steinman together again! <3
I loved Meatloaf... I was just one year old when Bat out of hell came out, so I started listen to his music when Bat Out of Hell II came out. And after that Bat out of Hell. His music is magic! Especially with Jim Steinman! I had Niklas (Polk) listen to Meatloaf when we met, and we had this song at our wedding. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zP-nrMvNjPw, "Because Of You". It's not one of his most famous songs, but it was a bit tricky to find something suitable for a wedding... ;)

I also was lucky enough to see him live once, the last concert he had in Sweden. I think it was 2008 or 2009, but he had unfortunately lost his powerful voice by then. But I can really recommend "Bat Out of Hell- the musical"! Niklas and I saw it in London a couple of years ago.

I just cant help it... here is the magic!

And I don't know how many late nights in the car, (when I´m on call at work, driving to "another colic" or something...) I stay awake by "sing along" to this one! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QGMCSCFoKA Bat out of hell

Seems like Meat Loaf and his music was well loved in England.

This is touching... The Queen's Guard's tribute to Meat Loaf.

I'm also fairly certain that Max Weinberg played the drums on some of the Meatloaf albums and I know for a fact that Roy and Max both were both on Bat out of Hell's title track, Paradise by the Dashboard Light and Two out of Three Ain't Bad. Lot's of E Street Band members representing on there and you can hear it particular in Paradise with the carousel like music at the beginning that sounds like you are in the carnival on the jersey boardwalk.

Meatloaf was one of my absolute favorites. I was very saddened when I heard and my spotify has been a revolving door of Meatloaf. If you want to see a great interview, go to youtube and watch Dan Rather's interview of him. Very touching and eye opening. Rest in Peace, sir. Thanks for the music of my life!
