2020 Alberta Season Updates

Post by Mara Jade Vess »

Continuing on from my previous thread since enough people seemed interested in my 2019 wrap.

If you're new here, my family owns three racehorses on the Alberta circuit. You can read all about them here.

Feb 24: Track opens
The track officially opened for training this morning, and Century Mile released a video showing some of the horses. The 3rd horse shown is Lyla, our newest claim, and the last one is a very revved up Irish, our allowance/stakes runner. You can view that video here (also available on Facebook under the same account name). The horses officially moved in on Sunday after they'd spent about 6 weeks in what we call spring training which is essentially prep work so they're ready to get back into galloping right when the track opens. All three trained well.

Update: new photo came out of our lady. From ATOBA's Facebook page

Opening day is set for April 25th – not sure yet if any of the three will be entered yet. Updates will likely be slow until then as I'm not heading up north until that week.

Feel free so ask questions if you have any!

Also Rochelle, you can hijack my thread to plug the Club's horses as well

Our old racemare, Wild Deuces, foaled a healthy colt on Saturday. This is Deuces' first baby and the delivery went well. The breeder is very happy with how well she's taken to being a mama as she's a maiden. More photos will likely follow since this is our first foal since 2008 and it's exciting!

It's No Joke out of Wild Deuces, by Formal Gold. Baby is 24 hours old in this photo.

With Alberta's racing season suspended indefinitely, our top horse, Irish Gold, shipped to Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg. He had some questions coming to this race but ultimately answered them and started the year with a nice win!

The race replay is available here. Set the date to June 3rd, Race #5. He's #8. When the YouTube replay is available, I'll post it here!

Took me a week to come down from this high, but for the first time ever we pulled off a double!

Irish went to the front and never looked back, not letting any horse within 2 lengths of him and cruised to win under a hand-ride. Foggy broke slow, tracked the leaders (even though he usually wants the lead, props to the jockey for getting him to settle) and charged home.

Not to mention it the first time I'd seen them in person since October of last year, and thankfully they remembered me (Irish even turned his head in the paddock when I called his name, such a sweet boy). We now have 3 wins from 9 starts, and a 44% OTB. Replays are available at this link (August 2nd, Race #4 and #7)

Foggy is the handsomest handsome to ever handsome. And Irish just looks so dang cute all the time. Can't describe how thrilled I was the boys got those wins for you!
