Re: Baffert Strikes again....
Can one of you in the RL industry give me your BEST GUESS as to what happened here?
I'm not defending him but somebody in the industry said, "If he was trying to cheat, he wouldn't use this drug as it doesn't really help". Any truth to that? What is the Occam's Razor here?

From Medline Plus...
Why is this medication prescribed?
Betamethasone topical is used to treat the itching, redness, dryness, crusting, scaling, inflammation, and discomfort of various skin conditions, including psoriasis (a skin disease in which red, scaly patches form on some areas of the body) and eczema (a skin disease that causes the skin to be dry and itchy and to sometimes develop red, scaly rashes). Betamethasone is in a class of medications called corticosteroids. It works by activating natural substances in the skin to reduce swelling, redness, and itching.
I had a friend a few years back get days for a banned substance. What she was using was a very common topical ointment called Polysporin on a very common condition called cracked heals. Cracked heals have a thousand or more remedies and many horses react different to different remedies. What works on one may not work on the next. Polysporin is commonly found in any drug store and not by prescription.
Could betamethasone one be used as such? Maybe, I don’t know. Would daily use build up in a horse’s system to give the results that came up in Kentucky? I don’t know, but you asked for a possible answer and I’m offering a very wild outside shot. Sorry, I’d suggest only the groom knows for sure and I’m equally sure that person has been questioned. We shall see.

Betamethasone is a potent, long-acting, synthetic glucocorticoid widely used in equine veterinary medicine as a steroidal anti-inflammatory. It is often administered intra-articularly (shot in a horse's joint) for control of pain associated with inflammation and osteoarthritis. Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.
If I wanted to give my horse an (illegal) advantage, I would consider giving my horse a shot of Betamethasone. This drug can be legally used before racing (14 days) in some jurisdictions. But you may be able to administer it must closer to race date (7 days) and still be within testing tolerance. If your horse receives a positive test result, you could produce records showing a 14+ day administration (even if you also gave another dose closer to race date) and argue testing error.

Re: Baffert Strikes again....
As others have said the drug is an anti inflammatory. This is the second time he’s had a positive for it in recent history and he also had some lidocaine positives, a pain med. I could imagine something where he’s treating horses with pain meds/anti inflammatories to keep them training when they should be resting and is pushing the envelope on when to stop before race day and gets in trouble when a horse doesn’t metabolize it quite as fast as expectedDan Gordon wrote: ↑2 years ago Can one of you in the RL industry give me your BEST GUESS as to what happened here?

Hes a cheater and he deserves and needs to be canceled. Long overdue. I cant believe he went on the the faux channel that spreads misinformation and defends insurrectionists to blame it on cancel culture.

Additionally, it is also worth noting that in the Jason Servis indictment, a vet assured him that there was no test in America for a PED known as SGF-1000, and that if a test did pick it up, it would appear as a false positive for another drug, Dexamethasone, a corticosteroid similar to Betamethasone which Medina Spirit came out positive for. Food for thought.

Re: Baffert Strikes again....
So my Dad had this horse with a coat that kept going yellow on the tips but he was otherwise healthy and working fine (we usually just dump them in the paddock for six months if they’re not fine. Time heals everything and if it doesn’t they shouldn’t be racing anyway). Our vet treated him with an injectable that is legal, but has to be out of their system for race day. To be safe, our vet gave him double the usual withdrawal time, so 4 days before the race instead of the recommended 2. The horse still went positive and he was DQed but because everything was documented and what not, there was only a small fine (because you’re ALWAYS responsible for presenting a horse to race with a restricted substance). It turned out the yellow coat and the positive swab were both linked to a kidney function issue. So there ARE horses who will throw positives even when the trainer has done the right thing.
Do I think that happened here? Absolutely not. He’s a known “needle man” trying to get a horse spot on for a major race. I bet Betamethasone was only part of the * he was getting. There’s no way he threw those levels without having a needle or a tube stuck in him. Can’t blame someone’s rash cream for being double the limit! I feel sorry for the horse. If he was sore enough to need this stuff he should have been sent for some time in the paddock or given a few weeks on the water walker or something.

Cleo, I absolutely agree with you 150%. While some testing itself is suspicious, he’s had far too many positives that can’t be ignored. It’s high time he was retired.

I can't believe they are letting the horse run in the Preakness.

He isn't alone. There are other such instances involving other people at tracks across America. It's only a crime in the eye of the public if you're caught.Nick Gilmore wrote: ↑2 years ago Cleo, I absolutely agree with you 150%.
