These Haikus are great and wonderful fun to read! Hope there will be lots more.

First an announcement. I need to move up the finish date as one of my judges will be out of town later. The contest will end Thursday April 3 at 9:00 game time. Results should be in by Saturday. I've changed it in the contest intro. I hope this doesn't inconvenience anyone.

To clarify a few points -- yes, it is syllables, not words for the 5-7-5 pattern. For example, "indubitably" could be a "5" line by itself.

Eric, I don't know whether or not a technically a Haiku can rhyme, though they usually don't, I guess. But here it was certainly not listed as part of the rules -- so rhyme away.

Some of you didn't specify the category; here are my guesses--let me know if I am wrong:

Humorous: Eric Larrow, Mike Eaton
Non humorous: Faith Powers, Mac Silver
"Luck is my middle name," said Rincewind, indistinctly.
"Mind you, my first name is Bad."

By my count, there are now 6 humorous and 6 non-humorous entries in each category. In each category, I am offering at least 3 "excellent" (3,000 GP) and 5 "very good" (1,000 GP) in each category -- (plus, of course, the fame and glory going to everyone who enters) -- to be determined by independent judges. Currently, therefore, there are 2 guaranteed winning open entries in each category.

Such a great deal, I think I'll jump in:

One, two, three, four, five.
SIMHorseRacing.com. Yeah!
(dot's a syllable)

Now, are you going to let *that* win 1,000 game points?

Shane Frederick: I put your entry in the humorous category. Let me know if that is not correct.

Remember also that you can submit as often as you want, with the last one counting. If you're having fun writing these, please keep them coming. I love reading them -- and I'm very sure that I'm not alone. You can always pick your favorite at the end to enter into the contest.

Following suggestions are only my opinions -- actual outcomes will be up to judges.

to Bleudot: it seems that you are using a 6-8-6 pattern. Searching the web, it looks like this is also an very accepted pattern. This contest, however, calls for the 5-7-5 pattern. So as not to handicap your entry in the contest, you might want to edit your lovely Haiku.

to Alysse Jacobs: I love your Haiku, but keep thinking that "Hours spent daily" is only 4 syllables -- I am just not sure about "hours" counting as two syllables.
"Luck is my middle name," said Rincewind, indistinctly.
"Mind you, my first name is Bad."

Hours is one of those words that's open to interpretation. I'm pretty sure it can be counted as 1 or 2... depending on the teacher. Although, Technically I think it's 2 syllables.

I totally agree. What I was suggesting is just that - "hours" might be counted as one or two syllables. Why I mentioned it was that the entries are going to outside judges and that Alysse might want to change the wording to eliminate the ambivalence. Or not -- it's her poem, after all.

But, Eric, while I'm talking to you -- I wish you would enter some more haiku. I thought your first was great and would like to see more, with or without rhyming.

She tripped on something.
I could have sworn it was a gate
It was her shadow.

She is quick to make her move
Oh Wow! There she went.

Non-humorous

Sunrise through the trees
Working hooves, wind in my ears
One steady rhythm
"The way I look at it, I'm not meeting anyone better than Julie K... so what am I missing?"

Humorous,

Hope this works:

I'm entered in the races
Quick, I have to get results
Huh, I'm scratched?
