I'll use a haiku I made for my Japanese class that was used in a contest. It's in Japanese and while the Japanese version fits the syllabilic pattern of a haiku, I'm not sure the English equivalent I'll write for it will. It can't really be translated into English the way it's intended too in Japanese but I'll try. It's also a senryu (humorous) form.

わすれない
頭に落ちた
鳥の糞

wasurenai
atama ni ochita
tori no fun

I can't forget the
day that the bird poop
fell onto my head.

(Pretend I'm at a racetrack or something, or farm. Ahaha.)

Here's an educational lesson from me, since some of you have made longer ones. (Just for some neat info, I guess)

Poetry is one of the oldest forms of Japanese literature/writing. Haiku is one of the more newer inventions, with the the tanka, chouka, and sedouka pre-dating it. These types of poems were found in Japan's first written works, the Nihon Shogi, Kojiki, and the first poem collection the Manyoushuu.

A haiku is and only is one stanza, following the 5-7-5 format. Japanese poetry revolve around the seasons, having specific words to indicate the feelings of the seasons called kigo. There are also puns, and words with double meanings. They do not rhyme, and it's only in the modern times that people have done so, but these fall under senryu types, which aren't held in as high esteem as traditional haiku, tanka, sedouka, and chouka forms are. (Although, the sedouka and chouka forms are nearly extinct today)

A tanka is a five line poem that has 5-7-5-7-7, or 5-7-5 7-7 syllabic count, and the first and second parts of the poem make up thematically different elements.

A chouka is a long poem that can go on indefinitely with a 5-7 syllabic count, but the last lines must end in a couplet with a 7-7 pattern.

A sedouka is a 6 lined poem with a syllabic count of 5-7-7, 5-7-7.

Krystle, thank you for the info, it is indeed neat. I didn't know that "humorous" was an accepted form for a haiku. I just thought it would make the contest more fun so put it in. Now I know it is actually the senryu form.

As of now, there are 11 entries in the senryu (humorous)category and 8 entries in the non-humorous category. Where there are multiple entries, I have taken the last one posted.

Chuck Whittingham: I put your haiku in the non-humorous category, let me know if that is not correct.

There are many wonderful and/or funny poems, but more are welcome. Reminder that the contest ends Thursday morning at 9:00 am game time and your entry will be the last haiku posted at that time.
"Luck is my middle name," said Rincewind, indistinctly.
"Mind you, my first name is Bad."

I draw my horses
Wishing that they might be real
Sad that they are not

Hours a day gone
The SIM now consumes my life
Procrastination

Run him here or there?
Should have listened to Eric
There goes my stakes win

If you're not Jolene
To geld or not to geld, yes
That is the question

Gone for over a week
With no internet or SIM
I won lots of money?!?

These are so much fun! I might write more later if I think of them. :D These are all humourous.

Contest ends tomorrow, Thurs. at 9:00 am game time. Still time to (re)enter!

Unless I hear differently:
Eric: I'll enter your first one.
Madelene: I'll enter the last one in your post: "Gone for over a week ..."

I thought of one for the non-humorous category (if my syllabic count is not right, remember english is not my first language anyway).

Derby winner:

Roses in my coat,
but now my heart feels empty:

Now Standing: Jester Of Kings (12k)

Also: Paperwork, Big, and A Dream of Him

Good ones!

Nuber Cano: your count seems exactly right to me.

Chuck Whittingham: putting it together, I realized you had both a humorous and non-humorous entry. I have entered into the contest your last (non-humorous) one: "Red roses in May..." Let me know if this isn't right.

Ronnie Dee: Non-humorous

RameyF: It was 10 and 10 in humorous and non-humorous. I think your entry fits slightly better into the humorous category and have entered it there, making it 11 humorous to 10 non-humorous. Let me know if you want it changed.

Can we leave our current entry, & add more (then the judges have to only pick one we made)?

Sorry, I thought of doing it that way, but it seemed like that would be asking way too much of the judges.
