Distance help

Post by Brooke Adams I »

Hello all you mixed breed experts, I have two, two year old Arabians that will be starting next year, and I am wondering what distance to race them at, based on their timed workouts.

Any suggetions appreciated.

I'd start Alto Vito at 1-1/4 miles and work up; the reason I think that is his 4F works are so-so, but his 6F he gets faster... She's Almost Legal may be a sprinter with that sub-52 second work. Tbe safe you could try them in 1 sprint before trying them in a route.

Here's what I posted in another thread:
I think one of the major keys is the 4F work for a sprinter & the 6F work for the routers... A good marathoner can still run 5F's in under 1:07...

Routing Examples:
Sayitsyurbirthday - 4F in 53.36, 5F in 1:06.01, 6F in 1:20.98 (undefeated router)
Tamaara - 4F in 53.23, 5F in 1:06.29, 6F in 1:21.18 (top 3yo filly router)
Johara - 4F in 53.37, 6F in 1:21.36 (top 3yo filly router)
Aziza - 4F in 53.78, 5F in 1:06.62 (mare is 3x winning router)
Forbidden Apple - 4F in 52.22, 5F in 1:06.42 (3yo winning router)

Sprinting Examples:
Nar - 4F in 51.46 (top sprinter)
Rian - 4F in 51.70, 6F in 1:22.40 (top sprinter)
Gametime Decision - 4F in 51.42, 5F in 1:06.65 (top sprinter)
Malak El Leila - 4F in 51.44, 5F in 1:07.42 (top sprinter)
Sahra - 4F in 51.80 (stakes winning sprinter)
Sandfire - 4F in 51.44, 5F in 1:08.07 (top 3yo sprinter)

Horses that can win at both distances with the best competition look like this:
Midnihte - 4F in 51.50 (he's a freak, though. He can sprint & route in the top competition.)
Haafiz - 4F in 51.76, 5F in 1:06.42, 6F in 1:20.94 (sprints & routes with the best)
Warhoon - 4F in 51.68, 6F in 1:21.68 (can sprint, but best at routes)
Shades Of Great - 4F in 52.48, 6F in 1:21.50 (won at both sprints & routes, but is a 2mile stakes winner)

From what I've seen, a top-quality sprinter (excluding the lazy morning workhorse) is going to run under 52 seconds for 4F's. Their 5F work may still be in the 1:06 range or under and then they tend to slouch off at 6F's (I've seen them in 1:21 and up, like Rian). The top-quality routers will tend to run a decent 4F (excluding the freaks that can route & sprint like Midnihte) in 52 to 53 and change, but their 6F works will be 1:20 to 1:21 range.

I've started my young Arabs by working them 4F, 5F, and 6F once each to see what trend they are leaving... if they get faster as their work distances increase then I'm assuming they are routers and vs versa for sprinters. Once the horses start having pedigrees we will be able to assume from that as well.
