I love the Breeders Cup points system. I'm wondering, what do folks think will be the minimum points level needed to break into one of the Breeders Cup fields? I assume all fields are capped at 14 entrants?

I wouldn't worry about it too much; the BC races often go off with short fields. Only the Juvenile and the Classic filled last year.

Really? Why is that? I honestly only have one stakes quality horse, so I really shouldn't be concerned by all of this. Nevertheless, I'd probably enter him if he could get in the race. I'd think folks would drop out of the woodwork trying to get a piece of that purse money, but then again, I'm still pretty new.

One of the reasons is that the Breeders' Cup isn't the only huge deal that week. Week 16 also has the Japan Cup, Estrellas, and a host of other Grade 1 races. There's about $30 million on the line in purses that weekend.

Also, while there are many people who overestimate their horses ability, there are many others who underestimate. Take Coup D'etat, this year's Derby winner, who Daryl Singhi pulled from the Juvenile last year.

Generally it's because the top five horses or so are so dominant that really minor horses aren't going to be able to win, especially if the 2nd tier horses are also pretty good.

With the Juvie it's a little different since the stayers really haven't had time to show what they have so it's harder to tell who's dominant at that distance, and EVERYONE wants a piece of the Classic.

I like the new point system. I think it really gives you a better idea of how "strong" the horse really is. When I glance at the other horses in a race, I usually look at the wins and then check out how much money. Then I have to look over the races to see "oh so and so has only won in claimers, not stakes..." or something like that. Now with the points, you will have a quick shot at the level the horse has performed at. Of course I will still look over the races and see who else was in them for the overall toughness of said races. But now its not all about earnings (although points and earning go hand in hand). B)

So this monring I was like what if Atlas had the point system when he was running and so I added up what he would have been awarded....

It came to 935. That was with the assumption that the Caufield Cup and Cox Plate would be considered G1's since they weren't labeled it. If they aren't then it's 875. Insane.

I have one horse who has 75 and I thought that was pretty sweet.

Who has the highest points so far? My tally is Edict, with his Preakness and several G1 wins this season. He has 292.

There's actually a "rankings" link, and then you can sort around by different divisions. Edict is the current point leader, for all active racehorses.
