Re: Annual Melbourne Cup Contest
The draw!
Just to clarify, the number represents barrier/gate and not saddlecloth number
Alex Puderbaugh 1
Louise Bayou 2
Clinton Jacinto 3
Bradley Davis 4
Bob Green 5
Kasie Gilespie 6
Michael Looker 7
Jon Smythe 8
Peter Gleason 9
Cleo Patra 10
Kimberly Jean 11
Laura Cameron 12
Bill Outsilver 13
Chani Ruzzo 14
Steph Lonhro 15
Eric Nalbone 16
Michael Edwards 17
Mike Eaton 18
Kenzie Larkin 19
Jon Xett 20
Nick Gimore 21
Fanta Arcadia 22
Happy Trails 23
Iggy Timeeczech 24
The field will be released in just over 20 hours or so. I think I'l be out at that time, so try this link perhaps:
http://www.racingvictoria.net.au/racing ... de=5019852
Cleo is actually positioned quite nicely for her threepeat with barrier 10.
Previous winners:
2010:
1- Cleo Patra (Americain) (12)
2- Carolyn Eaton (Maluckyday) (6)
3- Franky Dam (So You Think) (3)
Last - Matt Wilson (Zavite) (7)
2009:
1- Cleo Patra (Shocking) (22)
2- Happy Trails (Crime Scene) (11)
3- Iggy Timeeczech (Mourilyan) (14)
Last- Michael Edwards (Warringah) (17)
There's a 6f run to the first turn so barriers usually don't play too much of a part, so don't dispair if you have an outside one!
Good luck to all!
Peter

Re: Annual Melbourne Cup Contest
Found this old chestnut written by our old friend Tanitha in 2009. Worth reading if you signed up and have no idea what's going on
Melbourne Cup Sweeps
A sweep is when a number of people pay to purchase a ticket, each representing a horse. The tickets are given out randomly, and each ticket costs the same, so there is no skill element involved, and odds are ignored completely. The prize pool is made up of the receipts exclusively, and is divided out to the holders of the tickets for winning horses. Typically, the winnings are divided on a sliding scale for first, to second, third, and sometimes fourth place. There may even be some money given to last place, considering the random nature of a sweep. Sweeps are exceptionally popular in Australia for the Melbourne Cup, and as a social event the sweep becomes the focus of the day’s festivities.
The Melbourne Cup is Australia's major annual Thoroughbred horse race. Billed as The race that stops a nation, it is a race for three-year-olds and over, over a distance of 3,200 metres. It is the richest and most prestigious "two-mile" handicap in the world, and one of the richest turf races in the world. The event is held at around 3 pm on the first Tuesday in November on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne.
This years 2011 Emirates Melbourne Cup comes up as Race 7 at Flemington on Tuesday 1st November, 3pm (Melbourne time), and races for a purse of $6million AUD ($6.4m USD)

I think I may be conceding my usual win to Bill this year. Good luck to Steph too, who has my boy from last year. I love Americain.
