Annual Melbourne Cup Contest

Post by Peter Gleason »

Hey Guys

Now that the Melbourne Cup is a month away, I'm looking for opinions on how people want the Melbourne Cup Contest run this year

We can either do:

- a traditional sweep where I randomy pick out a horse for everyone (how it's always been done) OR
- everyone can pick their own horses in an order, which is randomly selected by me

What is the preferred option of the two? Or if someone has an alternative, by all means share.

I'll put in some cash and there'll be an entry fee to ensure a pretty epic prize pool. Possibly around $3mil SIM money or something. My original aim was the actual Mebourne Cup prizemoney amount, but I don't have that much money and I'm not feeling that generous anymore, haha. If anyone wants to donate a prize, let me know.

If anyone is interested in entering now, feel free to express interest in this thread, but I'm really just looking for thoughts as to how it should be run at this stage.

Cleo will win of course, so maybe I should just give her some cash and not worry about this :D

Thanks for reading!

------------------------------------------------------------------

Update: Entries for the sweep have begun

How it works:

For starters you will pay 50k to enter. In the week before the race I will sell you a horse for this amount, you accept and return at your leisure.

Once everyone has paid, I will randomly draw out names for each horse in the Melbourne cup. If your horse comes in first, second, third or last you get the amount of cash in the post a couple above this one.

Entry fee: 50K SIM
Prize Pool: 3mil to be split up as follows:

1st: $1.65m
2nd: $850k
3rd: $400k
Last: 100K

Since I'll be in it, there will be 23 spots available. Scratchings on the day will result in either a deduction from the prize pool of 50K or I'll just absorb the cost - it will depend on my mood.

Special mention to Laura Cameron who has donated 500k into the prize pool.

I like this idea! Haha.

On a slightly more serious note, I prefer sweeps. Its just traditional, you know? Can't have a Melbourne Cup without a proper sweep.

I prefer the traditional sweep, for sure.

What's the Cup prizemoney this year? $6mill?

Edited to answer my own question- it is $6mill.

Entry fee will be raised to 75k...total prize pool $3mil. Or is 75k too much?

It depends on how much prizemoney people want I suppose

Higher entry fee = higher prizemoney to pay out

$75k sounds fine to me, but I am experiencing an unprecedented era of SIM-wealth :)

I'm good with a smaller entry fee if it's the difference between getting 24 unique entries/people feeling happy about the sweep and not.

It's only fake money, what the heck - I'll put in $500k on top of whatever the entry fee ends up being.

Geez...I never saw this post from you Laura. Very generous! I'll get in touch with you via messages.

Probs will open up the sweep to entrants sometime after the weekend's racing, as there's pretty much only 2 weeks until the cup
