Gallops

Post by Marzy Dotes »

My milers are absolutely hopeless. I did something really evil. I bred my Iron City filly to Lion and got "stiff and awkward" and somehow I don't think chasing is in its future. So it's off to the rodeo.

The other two galloped HTT/Okay which is fine.

The routers did better. Mostly wings (and a portion of okays/HTT) and three stakes gallopers (all in the last four I galloped, lol ) which is one better than last year and those were from more established sires. One of them Jest the Law's filly by Yes might actually like doing miles too. Her dam was kind of a jack of all trades on dirt and AW.

Question about AW gallops, I only have a couple of AW mares so I'm a bit out of the loop on them; Are better gallops rarer in the AW runners?

Its my general impression that they are, given how well my HTT runners do.

The reason I ask is that I got a nice "Stakes" galloper from Yes, Affirm, and I don't think I've had anything higher than "wings" on AW before

Don't know much about routers and milers. On the sprinter side I had a lot of Wings/Great nothing higher. Smile for Em, Rocket Launch and Rabbitthrutheglass generated the most. I got hurt by Seraph and Fallen in Battle spent 30/35,000 stud fees with star and formidable mares who were stakes winners and could only get nice/okay gallops out them.

My gallops overall were better on the router side. I'm doing better with Yes in the past two seasons than previously. Dumbledore was better too. Harder luck with Standout this time around.

Interestingly enough, on the miler side, my Shuttered Island X Haze of Winter was bumped from claimer to "okay". I've seen that with quite a few "claimers" turning two actually in different divisions.

I dug up this yearling filly who galloped "wings". She's by Dr. Ghazi and out of a Just Victory mare named River Mystic. The mare's out of Miss Quixote who's that Sunday Silence/Secretariat CAM combination often used for AW routers. I'm not sure what this one will do on dirt or AW. She had her booty kicked in her one AW route but it was a stacked MSW. She did work decently on the surface before that drubbing.

I thought JV would just be an exorbitantly priced source of AW talent but maybe worth trying on the female side if you have a broodmare sired by him that didn't quite work out. And there's talk about JV being a potential producer of miler/short router combos which means it's fair game to corrupt him with AW as well. :)

I also have another mystery yearling in this filly who's by multi-surface sire West and out of Sweet Incarnation and it galloped "great". West is tri-surface and I've got one who's dirt/AW (Tina Sparkles) and another who's AW/turf (Winged Monkey) that are getting ready to race this year. Sweet Incarnation is by Start Of The End who had winners on all three surfaces and she's out of Incarnation a daughter of Acapulco. I would have liked to try Incarnation but she was pensioned and then green pastured so she's deceased. But Sweet Incarnation wound up being a short router for AW though she broke her maiden at a mile. Like quite a few SOTE mares, she's rated "formidable" by Liza. She's a challenge to breed as she's been mostly bred to turf, i.e. Born Tattered who's by Tattered. I broke Born Tattered's slump on the grass by running him on the plastic and he was third with a SF of 62. For some reason, some of my horses come back stronger on the original surface when I do that and he won next time out well on the turf. Tattered's progeny when combined with turf bred horses also carrying AW bloodlines will work quite decently. I guess that might have to do with Frayed who showed his AW side when he sired Venting, a turf bred AW miler.

That's something in breeding that's interested me is looking at AW combined with turf which right now is much less seen than either pure AW (through CAH turned studs) and AW/dirt bloodlines which dominate the breeding side. Winged Monkey who's dam is Abdication (by End of the Line) has a half sister Leah Clearwater (by Fang) who was a stakes placed AW router. Abdication also had a turf wow by Tattered who's running like a claimer and just broke 50 for the first time in his third start.

La Belle Dame who's a tri-surface star broodmare by Chretiens and out of the Sunday Silence/Secretariat mare who produced Louisville Palace is one of those AW/turf experiments. She's got a daughter by Magician who's a slow working "stakes" who's AW/turf leaning. A son by Smoulders who galloped "okay".

Even though I have Bad Traffic I am beginning to question if he's only a AW sire. I have a really nice filly that looks to be more dirt than aw with him which is sorta disappointing because i depended on him improving my aw milers. Otherwise I got a nice router yearling at the moment by Fallen in Battle. I've been wanting something for routers. As is the hypos for aw rather suck so its hit and miss and i've been missing pretty hard. Maybe Delta is going to be like her sire but i'll have to wait and see.

I'm hoping Northern Skies can become another Treasure Strike. Both from the formidable Boise State Fox, Skies put up a STAKES quality gallop. But being sired by West, it's gonna mean lots of workouts on all three surfaces to find the right fit..

Yeah I think the Iron City studs have dirt miler ability built into them as he's a dirt horse. Got a couple wings by IT who were from OTG mares and they work about the same quality on both surfaces. I've got an Iron City broodmare who's formidable but very hard to breed b/c she's locked into that bloodline. I've got a daughter of a half to Iron City named Chamorita (who's by Loki Dynasty) and the mare Hafa Adai (by OTG) has some AW ability though with her lines she's more towards dirt. I thought about swinging her back and breeding her to IT or BT but haven't made the plunge yet.

I had mixed results.

Sprinter
Jimmy Rigged. F. Great Gallop. Rocket Launch x Duct Tape Lady (Smile for Em)

Router
Fanged Angel F. Great Gallop. Archangel x Fang Banger (Fang)
Living Landscape F. WOW. Tends to Surprise x Implant (Astonishing)
Rodeo Calgirl F. Great Gallop. Coach Cal x Vampire Rodeo (Fang)

I did not breed as many to Cal this season simply because I bred less horses and most of my AW router mares have seen him. I will be on the hunt for new girlfriends for him this season. He has a good number of Aw and turf winners. He does well being bred to aw mares with a turf influenced pedigree.
