Stud fees

Post by Louise Bayou »

Am I the only one that thinks the rise is Chaser stud fees seems a bit much? I totally get that it's the stallion owners right to stand them for what ever they want. But I don't see how the purse structure and actual racing schedule supports the 30k and up fees.

I was actually very excited about buying a few more mares and getting into Chasing. But at this point I am thinking selling all but maybe one and getting out of them all together.

No, you are not the only one.

It's not just the purse structure vs high stud fees that irritate, but that one has to wait so long for the offspring to race.

The solution is to support the stallions at reasonable fees, or try to get your own stallion. Or try to find a Game Point stallion. (I used Casino Drive this past season.)

My guy Broadsword stands for 10k, and ranks 5th amongst chasers in percent stakes winners, and 8th in average earnings, at 20k.

I agree. I have only a handful of 'chaser only type mares and this is the main reason. Why pay 20k+ for a foal that I have to wait 3 seasons to even know if it is even worth keeping? There are a number of turf route/chaser type mares out there and with them I at least get a chance to run them as a 2yo AND 3yo if they show promise over the flat. Plus, many turf route/chase stallions are cheaper than strictly chase stallions. Sure, they may not all turn out to be naturals over jumps, but they have the added chance of actually producing before they jump steeples.

Agree Regina. Like I said, I am not saying you can't stand your stud for whatever you want. But to me it almost pushes people out of the Chase game. Besides Leap of Faith(who I love and even his fee is hard to swallow) there is no stud that I am willing to pay more than $25k for. I love Mine those Stars, I get natural jumpers and he is very reasonable at $10k.

As a player who only dabbles in chasers (I breed maybe 2 or 3 per year, maximum), I tend to agree. I just don't have the mares to justify paying 30k or more.

Okay, on closer inspection I'll take my remark back. Only 3 chaser studs at 30k or above right now.

I think you just need to look for bargains...I think this guy certainly qualifies. Graded winner, over $500k in earnings and a killer female line...at $5k.

All at $10k...Star Conquest (at 14, breed soon), Prize Bull (63 winners and counting), and as previously mentioned Mine Those Stars (14 wins and just getting started).

This guy is buy Mine Those Stars and he is a 'great' galloper. I am looking forward to racing him at two and three before checking his jump comment.

Most of jumper fees are under 20k for this reason. With Jete you are paying for that killer female line that won't be available until Hart Dáction and Figure Skater retire... So go breed and be merry :)

He is one of my favorites :) I've sent a ton of turf route/chaser mares to him and gotten lots of B to B+ flat nicks and A- to A chasing nicks.

I rarely use the expensive types not when Lee Key Shipyard stands everything for 10k, these all normally have very nice pedigrees and produce naturals everytime for me.

The item I always try to remember is you have 7 potential years of racing your chaser. In that amount of time, if you can't make back $35k-$50k I would tend to think the mare you are breeding with might not be one you want to keep (with excpetions of course, mares can always throw duds or the stallion she was sent to that year didn't pan out).

Over 7 years of racing if you can earn $1,190 per start, or $7,143 per year, you'll pay back the stud fee of a high priced $50k Chasing Stallion.
Over 7 years of racing if you can earn $595 per start, or $3,571 per year, you'll pay back the stud fee of a high priced $25k Chasing Stallion.

I think there is a need for more Claiming races in the Chasing game. There are fields in allowance and stakes races where the horses should be in claiming races. I know I often have to place runners well above their head to get a race into them. That or I have to create a race.

Plenty of decent chasers out there for $15k-$25k and at that price range, many are a bargain.

I have naturals that can't win a $10k claimer.
