No! Not Diamond Boy!

Post by Gigi Gofaster »

Today we lost this grand old man to pensioning...he will be dearly missed. What a superstar, despite losing out to the infertility bug.

here are a few highlights of his career, on and off the track...

2 year old -

Third in the Strong Yankee after two early, impressive wins, including one by 13 lengths! Then on to run second in the (what was then) Steward's Crown Juvenile, behind Woodbine but ahead of Battle Creek Road. Those three duked it out quite a bit!

3 year old -

Started out with a 4 length win in a freshener, then third in the Yankee Trot and fourth in the Steward's Crown.

4 year old -

Beats Woodbine and Battle Creek Road in the Yankee Mile, and takes Du Quoin down int he New World Mile. runner up in two more stakes races, that year.

5 year old -

Second behind Echo Hanover to start the year, before knocking down battle Creek Road again in the Money Honey Stakes. gets a Grade One win and another stakes before fading later in the year and off to stud. Finishes up with a very deceptive $493,000 account and 20 (9-4-3), but he is waaaay better than those stats suggest.

At Stud:

His first crop got the supermare Diamonds N Gold - Simmy and Cup winner - and also broodie extraordinaire (think Made of Awesome), but his heir apparent is Diamonds and Gold, 3 time Simmy winner, 2 time Cup winner, and looking useful as a stud himself. More recent names like Souls of Aredyrah, Diamond Honey and Rosalind came along before he got hit with the infertility bug, but he made it back again with a bumper crop of over 100 yearlings, and 42 foals this year by those smart enough to grab him while they still could...
let's hope there's more superstars hiding in those babies!

So, thanks to Max for making this great horse available to us at a bargain price, and here's hoping he enjoys a long and happy retirement!
"I was afraid of Gigi, it was true." Oh yes. Be afraid. Be very afraid...
"Gigi, you continue to impress the heck out of me." - The Steward. Okay, it was 10 RL years ago, but I'm keeping it.
