SDP Derby - Race Review

Post by D's Racing Stable »

A full field of 12 Canadian 3yo boys and girls are set to take the gate for the 4th SDP Canadian Derby. The $500,000 purse has attracted the best of the best for the first jewel of the $1,000,000 SDP Triple Crown. The largest purses in all weather racing are up for grabs here in the Derby and Triple.

Let’s meet the field

Starting from the inside post is After Ventus. She is a 3yo Filly owned by Madelene Gilbert and out of Treasure Strike. She got off to an ok start running 5th but came back of the layoff to rope home by open lengths. I think the added distance will suit her but the 4 weeks is a little concerning. 10/1

Starting in the #2 gate is Centimetre. She is a 3y filly also out of Treasure Strike. She won first time out when the SDP Canadian Juvenile stakes winner was third in that event. She has come back to run third in the Grade 3 Bond Stakes and was a well back 8th. She now comes home to Canada to try her way in the Canadian Triple Crown instead of the Triple tiara. 8/1

Pace Maker #3 He is owned by D’s Racing Stable and is out of the stallion that has had all the past winners of the Derby Bluegrass Stakes. He ran for bottoms in his first start but did run an ok 6th in the SDP Canadian Juvenile Stakes. 50/1

Here we have our slight favorite. Her name is D’s Scarlette. She is owned by D’s Stable. She is also out of Bluegrass Stakes. This filly is one of the more experienced Contenders in the field having 3 starts all being in the top 3. She had a quick come back after her first time out to run in a NW2 in stead of a maiden race in witch she ran a hard fought second. Dipaola seeing great potential in his new found star decided to again run his maiden agents top-notch horses in the SDP Canadian Juvenile Stakes. She was sent right to the lead by Ian black and held them all of flourishing with the added distance of 1/1/8. She comes into the Derby at 2/1

Dynasty forever is a 3yo son of Wise Dan. Kasie Gillespie owns him. He started off his career running in a one mile event. He came up with a win in that event. Since then he has come back with a decent effort while running 4th in the Plastic Futurity Grade 3. He then took a 4 week layoff to come back and run a respectable 4th in the SDP Canadian Juvenile Stakes. I think this horse is the sleeper in the race I think the 4 weeks hurt him coming into the Juvenile. I think the quick 2 weeks will help him for sure. The one thing that might hinder him is his stallion Wise Dan being a solid miler. 6/1

Food Coma is a 3yo filly out of Fallen in battle. Chani Ruzzo owns her. She is just starting to find her way as she ran a ok 2nd and then came back with a win for bottoms at dropping down. 40/1

Max Bluegrass is a 3yo colt out of Bluegrass Stakes and owned by Garrer Folsom. He is a up and comer. He had a hard career running in some tuff races. He improved tremendously in the Juvenile when 2nd. I think he will enjoy the 1/1/8 and could come with a late bid. 7/1

Rousseau is a 3yo colt out of Treasure Strike. Phil Hoeflich owns him. He coming into the Derby is great shape having 3 weeks off coming into it. He has never been worse then second in his 3 starts and has recently stretched out to 1/1/8 in the Sea Hero Grade 3. 4/1

Starry Blue Sky is a 3yo filly by Bluegrass Stakes. Alex Safka owns him. She broke her maiden first time out for $25,000 but then bumped up to a Grade 3 and ran 6th. She tried her luck in restricted company in the Juvenile but didn’t fair to well coming 5th. 15/1

Strike Out is a 3yo colt bred by the Steward and owned by Kenzie Larkin. He ran a ok 3rd first time out and came back with a win 3 weeks later. He comes in as a fresh horse. 12/1

Who’s Content is a 3yo colt out of Happy Racing. Chris Simpson purchased him for $400,000. He ran a disappointing 6th in his first start. He came back to run the Derby distance of 1/1/8 and he was a comfortable winner on that day. 20/1

Wise Boss is a 3yo colt by Wise Dan. Dusty Klatt owns him. He ran 2nd first time. He came back 3 weeks later to win on the drop in class. He then tried to run in the Grade 3 Sea Hero but was a distant 5th. I think he has a decent shot hi the board. 15/1
