Re: SIM Santa
Further explanation in case it is needed...
Yes, there was a 2% downward change in our nicking system to, as Laura said, leave room for growth. It was across the board, which means every nick was affected by 2%, whether or not that puts your cross in a different category, every nick was affected the same. No HORSES were affected in the making of this change.

The mare is just a better version of its new nick.Mike Larson wrote:Are foals' gallops pretty much decided upon creation or when the season rolls over?
I just nicked one I already bred and saw a downgrade. I would not have made that same selection with this new nick.
Any special reason why we are introducing such a change now? 22,327 foals so far
For example if the nick previously was A- and now its a B+ nothing has changed besides the letter grade. The outcome would still be the same.
The mare is on the higher end of a B+, but not quite an A-.
Basically think of your horse having a hidden numerical value associated with it. The numerical value of the mare remains the same, but the qualification to be considered an A- has increased.
This means that now you wont get as upset when your previous A- nick gives you a HTT since it might really be considered a B+ nick.
It essentially lowers our expectations at the same time might save you from breeding a bad foal in the future as the nick might no longer an A- or B+ and you might be less inclined to breed it due to that.
This is the same change that was made with gallop comments last season and BS comments a few seasons back.
My guess is that this change will affect mixer nick a lot more then TB nicks since the mixers tend to be a lot higher consistently.

Re: SIM Santa
I'm enjoying it. I normally hypo very little, but I've given some lesser (at first glance) stallions a shot with some of my mares and come up with some interesting matches that I wouldn't have tried otherwise, so, loving it!
Glad that I have some spare time today.
Someone would have been upset no matter when or how this happened... same as the gallop changes, the BSA changes, anything that affects someone's prior perception of a horse. Yet change has to happen sometime.

Re: SIM Santa
I'm enjoying this immensely because it is actually helping me weed through formidable mares that I was having trouble with. The 2% downgrade in their nicks is going right along with B+ nicks going to Bs on mares that were NOT producing well, and now I see why. Huge help in getting me to get rid of things

I did the nicks for Mike Eaton and sent them and got an A- nick for one. <a href="http://s837.photobucket.com/user/barrel ... 7.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i837.photobucket.com/albums/zz29 ... 81e367.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo image_zps0781e367.jpg"/></a>

Re: SIM Santa
I agree with what Erin said above. I'm really cleaning house on some Formidable mares that now can't get a B+ nick to save their lives!
