Kentucky Derby - selfie stick ban

Post by Stormy Peak »

Korea banned selfie sticks last year...due to their electronic laws...that all electronics had to have a serial number and be registered as safe, according to their agency that regulates radio waves, digital signals...etc. There was concern that so many sticks were on the market and that at some point some would interfere with important communication signals.

They were pretty serious about the ban, had a high fine and jail time for those caught selling and using 'non-registered' sticks. The sellers faced like a $30,000 fine and 3 years in jail.

Seems like the Derby this year is going to ban them...although they didn't say why. Unless it was because too many of them ticked off other people who were tired of the sticks being waved in the air while they are trying to watch the races?
I'm not familiar with them at all...maybe others here might have ideas as to why they would be banned.

Because if you're in the paddock area on a nice day on Derby, there's barely room to move, let alone whip out a selfie stick. I'm also fairly certain that all the drunks in the infield do NOT need a selfie stick - someone's going to get hurt.

I could see one of the drunks on the rail or close to the paddock using it (intentionally or not) to spook a horse so I'm glad they banned them. The college kids at Keeneland have been bringing them and I'm already annoyed by them and they aren't even as drunk as the Derby people will be.

I personally think selfie sticks should be banned from everything for the sake of society.

Now the detachable lens ban... grrrr
