Soundness in trotters

Post by Tom Lin »

I thought I would share a sample size of my results.
Vetted all 2yo's that are Alw+

Very Unsound - 21
Somewhat Unsound - 35
Sound - 52
Very Sound - 0 !!!

Total 2yo's - 108
Very Unsound 19.44%
Somewhat Unsound - 32.40%
Sound - 48.14%
Very Sound - 0.00% !!!

Just wondering is the Very Sound comment reserved for other breeds. I can't imagine that I wouldn't have 1 Very Sound 2yo trotter in the barn. More than half of the barn essentially has some soundness issues. :?

Checked 100-ish trotters and had THREE come up very sound, This CAM and a couple of her offspring. That would indicate Varenne being a source of very-soundness, hopefully not the only one.

Went through my active studs, Made of Awesome and The Road to Hell are both sound, the rest somewhat unsound.

I like this feature, but I think there should be a litte more randomness to it, genetics is far more complicated than this, so I think there should be a (very small) percentage chance of getting a completely different soundness rating than the parents'.

Only 9 yearling trotter yearlings but

4 Somewhat Unsound
4 Very Unsound (Bubblewrap recommended)
Seems some very gentle, gentle approach required

My Trotter broodmare from the Steward mixer sale, Write With Dazzle is my only Very Sound. Her foal is Somewhat Unsound and I have one other broodmare that is Sound.

I'm not sure I even know what soundness even means in trotters, since trotting every two weeks is hardily taxing! :?:

I have a theory that a very sound standardbred could race two weeks straight every now and then.
It's alive!

I have no trotters, and I've only checked 5 of 47 Pacers in training, but I got 2 very sound, 2 sound and 1 somewhat unsound.
I checked 6 stakes rated 2 yo Pacers and got 1 very sound, 3 somewhat unsound and 1 very unsound

I did all my yearlings and surprisingly got a bunch of Very Sounds. It has become apparent that Trixton, Royalty for Life and Wishing Stone are all Very Sound. Some of the resulting yearlings were out of Very Unsound mares.
