Favourite Breeders' Cup Races?

Post by Laura Smith »

It's that time of year again!

I ran across this on YouTube this morning and couldn't stop grinning the whole way through.
I used to work at the barn Saturday afternoons and had to record every NBC BC broadcast on VHS to watch (over and over and over again) later. 1998 was the best year ever as far as I was concerned, and I watched that VHS until the tape broke. I loved Awesome Again with every fiber of my being and had been at his Plate win the year before. When he won the Classic, I almost cried. I mean, come on. The field! The crazy stretch run! The racecall! And Mike and Bob's (and Mutton Chops'...) commentary. There was a time when I could recite by memory every line of the entire BC broadcast from that year because I'd watched it so many times...
The same year, Escena's Distaff win. The stretch call still gives me chills. "And ESCENA...IS...STILL...THERRRE!"
Da Hoss's comeback, though being twelve I wasn't sure who Lazarus was and had to ask my parents...

Chief Bearhart and Favorite Trick in '97 were really close to my heart as well -- and I can't forget 2004, when Ghostzapper made me happy and Singletary made me rich (at least until later that night.)

Anyone else? Favourites? Good memories?

For me the 2003 BC always stands out. A family friend galloped all of the Mandella winners and had worked for Richard for about 20yrs. I was SO happy for her. Pleasantly Perfect had always been a barn favorite of mine and his win in the Classic made me loads of money that day!

But I'd say getting to be around Beholder during her career and getting to be there for each of her BC wins has to top anything else. Cried like a fool each time and vaguely remember the aftermath of each race.lol Pretty much nothing tops last years Distaff ! What.A.Race!

Love Goldikova's 2010 mile and her groom's reaction (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W70SzJtkQwk). Almost made up for what happened latter that day.

2004 was my first Breeders Cup and Flanders was one of my first favorite horses so that Juvenile Fillies is special to me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsdG_B1EliA

the 2007 breeder's cup was amazing to me. I was a huge fan of English Channel, Curlin (still am) because I LOVE Smart Strike so when both of those amazing horses won, i was almost in tears. Also Midnight Lute <3

It is sad about George Washington in the 2007 BC Classic but I try to focus on the good, and not the bad :( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cB1BYFpteBc

Yeah, I haven't really been into horse racing for super long (American Pharoah lit my interest). I found a Zenyatta playlist on YouTube and played them all out of curiosity. The 2009 Classic is absurd.

Zenyatta and Frankel are my two favorites just from YouTube browsing.

Another fun one for those new to racing is Arazi's Juvenile. It was supposed to be a two horse race between Arazi and Bertrando and the announcer goes to set up the epic battle between those two we are about to see, and Arazi has other ideas.

Obviously the 1995 Classic with Cigar... because if you don't love that race... you're wrong...

And then also the 1996 Turf with Rick's Natural Star... who is probably STILL running.

Somewhere in a box at my dad's house is a scrapbook of every article from the local papers pertaining to that Breeders' Cup... And they went hard on the RNS story. I can't wait till I get back there... I'm sure there are some choice articles.
I was about to say "Hey, what happened to him after all?" but then I found this. http://www.drf.com/news/ten-years-later-whole-new-life
