Late bloomer
My one Steward's Cup winner last night was Dio who also happened to be a late nominee this year. I brought her out of the Kyasuriin Matsumoto dispersal a few year's back. She was a nice enough filly breaking her maiden her second time out and doing well in allowance races but she could not get a stakes win no matter how hard I tried. Finally broke through and got that first stakes win week 9 of her 5yo year. So now I had a dilemma. I was pleased with her stakes win but did it really make sense nominating a filly to the Steward's Cup that was 5 years old with only one stakes win. I decided it didn't. But then she won another stakes race and finished 2nd with a 90 speed figure so I decided I had to giver her a shot, so paid the $50,000 for the late nominee. Well she rewarded that with a win and 99 speed figure.
