After his last race I'm a little confused as to where he should go next. I know I probably shouldn't have run him back on 2 weeks rest, although the vet said he was ready to go, so the distance may have been more of a problem than anything. But, anyways, what do you veterans think? Should I just take a step back and run him in an allowance race where he would probably have good shot at winning, or do you think he would do fine in another stakes race? He was on a roll until his last race, so now I'm not so sure where he will end up fitting. Also, do you think it was more the distance or is he just not a Grade 1 type horse? Any advice would be appreciated!! I'm probably just overreacting, but I'd feel awful if I messed up a nice horse...

It was definately the distance, not the rest. Even 1/16th of a furlong can mean so much, seach my horse Sale Stopper for proof.

The stakes race looks like a good fit, but I couldn't be bothered looking at how strong the horses were in it so maybe someone else will answer the question better

I think you just ran into a very tough race in the last outing. I actually scratched a decent allowance horse because it came up so hard. I'd look at 1 1/8 + instead of shortening him up.

Good luck!

Turf miles are almost like sprints sometimes. And there are a lot of mile specialists. I'd stay over 9 furlongs as well, probably between 9 and 10. I wouldn't have felt bad running him on two weeks rest if you vet checked him the day of the race.
