Break injuries

Post by Phil Furlong »

I have a really hard time understanding how I could have THREE 2yo get break injuries today, when there are a total of 100 applied to the entire population of horses turning 2, per the help center.
How many horses turned two today? 50,000, 100,000, more?
Three horses knocked out of action, cost $15,000.
Sorry, just griping, seems statistically ridiculous.

150-200 2yos buck their shins. That said, four of them were mine, so I guess my luck was also very bad this year.

Break injuries

Post by Phil Furlong »

This is per the Help Center….

“Break Injuries

“Break injuries, which occur during the break between years, include 250 mares becoming barren for the year, 100 two-year-olds bucking shins, and 20 stallions becoming infertile for the year. These do not count towards your random injury count for the season because these horses recover to fight another day.”

So, seven percent of the break injuries hit just two stables…..out of how many horses who turned two today.

Got lucky this sim year with break injuries. I only had one that bucked shins and he wasn't even ready to race so the time off will do him some good and all my mares are fertile and so are my stallions. Just sad though that I know I will lose one of my stallions sometime this sim year since he is 14 and that is usually when the sim decides to retire them from breeding. He will make a nice stable pony though.

Revised

Post by Phil Furlong »

Revised per new info from The Steward….
Five percent of the break injuries hit just two stables…..out of how many horses who turned two today, at least 50,000?
At 50,000, the chances of a 2YO getting a break injury are 0.3%.
Guess I better check my karma going forward!

I had none that I can see, it happens. Unless the chances are zero percent, its not hard to understand. Its random, its luck, it happens, rare as it may be one way or the other.

1 Bucked Shin on a 2 year old QH filly -- productive late bloomer with a timid heart

3 Barren Mares. kind-ish good news...
~one is a T-bred 18 years old, an unpredictable
~one is a QH 19 years old, formidable
~one is a QH 6 years old, formidable

-----------

It could have been a lot worse, I guess - given my barn is mostly turf routers.

I just dabble in the mixers, so losing the two QH mares for the season, isn't an issue and the old T-bred wasn't one of my better mares. Ditto with the injured QH filly with the timid heart and only a productive.
