Buying a Farm

Post by Elkippos Larysios »

Looking to buy a farm for a reasonable price, preferably in the U.S.A. or nearby locations. There are way too many farms, so I'd like to avoid building a new one. If there is any interested party, please send me a private message.

I did indeed. Unfortunately, we couldn't work something out.

Building your own farm will cost $2 million so anything under that price is a bargain.

There are also farm maintenance fees of $20K every 4 weeks to consider. Most farms operate at a loss at the end of the day.

Unless you have tens of millions of Simbucks or have thousands of horses, buying a farm is probably one of the worst purchases of the game.

As a newer / smaller barn, it’s far better to just reinvest into your own barn with nice young racehorses, elite mares, etc.

Don’t pass up on the next Deputy Governor to buy a farm that will lose you money.

Thank you, Diane and Randall for the advice and guidance. I took things into consideration when deciding to buy one.

I made this post just in case there was someone out there who may have bought farms from cheap dispersals and/or had multiple in the same location and wanted to get rid of it. I have seen farms sell for 700k-1million in such cases, advertised in forum posts.
I don't want to build a new one unless I have no other choice (and plenty of funds), and I'm certainly not going to buy a pre-built for the amounts currently on sale.

I'm running a large barn since the start (I did the strategy of buying all the cheap horses from the new player section) and it will only grow next season.
I estimate my board fee costs will be double or triple than the 80k yearly farm fee's.

I joined late in Y65 and even so, I have paid more than 100k in board fee's according to the "transactions" tab, even tho I'm careful to only board in farms with a $20 fee. Just saving on that will pay for the farm itself over time, if I could find one for a reasonable price.

You may also need to consider shipping costs. It costs a lot to ship, especially if you use first class shipment. It also costs a lot with ordinary shipment, if you gonna ship your horses from one single place to all around the world.

None of my racers are at A Absolute, they are all at other players stable because it's the most economical thing to do : )

That's a good point Sara, although I'm looking to get into and experiment with breeding, so I will have a ton of idle horses in my barn. As well, I will be retiring/pensioning a lot of my weaker/bad horses over time as I'm nearing my exit from Trial park.

This is all new to me, a big learning experience. I have until the break/foals due date to decide, either go ahead with my plan, or nuke my whole barn (except my best runners & mares) and run a small operation going forward.

The advice and guidance from more experienced players (like in this post) has being invaluable, so I am grateful for that. I just hope I won't make too many (and terrible) mistakes, and if I do, I can hopefully learn from them.

Honestly i think we ALL were dying to have a farm when we started. lol That being said, unless you plan on investing a lot of time, have a lot of horses that will make you money its not worth it. That $20k comes often and if your farm isn't in a sweet spot to get a few extra boarders its a money pit.

BUT I get wanting one. Best of luck!

I have been playing since Year 19. I have never owned a farm -- farm ownership in the Sim never seemed like a good investment to me. In addition, farm ownership seems "too realistic" -- hassles of property ownership with little or no fun attached.

Looking at the auction section, Mifune and Pema dispersal auctions, it seems your are doing what I always talk about - downsizing. That's a lot of horses in those auctions!

Personally, I did it because when asking around for advice in the start (on discord, forum, etc.) I found that it is a valid strategy for new players due to not having to pay daily fee's. There is really no downside if you can manage to race as many as possible and fill races in Trial park. I was advised to get rid of anything below allowance, but later I found out even terrible horses can earn money filling empty races.

I am still selling a ton of horses, some of them at a big loss due to making some terrible purchases and claims, some of them incredibly fast and for good prices. I have started pensioning/sending to AJ anything that won't sell because soon I will start paying daily fee's and I don't want to be stuck with horses that don't earn anything (well, besides mares and foals).

It's why I started looking for a farm, to mitigate as many passive expenses as possible If I were to run a large barn (and breed) going forward.

Apologies, just found out how to quote properly without going back 10 replies.

I understand the suspicion, I have being investigated some 6–7 weeks ago due to that player(s) and warned that it looks suspicious. I have not cheated nor do I have other accounts, the first thing I did when I joined was read the rules. I encourage investigation and/or reporting any suspicions to the Steward/admin. I have provided and will continue to provide all proof I have.

Thank you for your understanding, and I'm still looking for a cheap farm If I can find any

Don't feel bad. When I first started I was accused of being a returning player using a fake name, then like 2 weeks later I was somebody's sister and there was supposedly a scam there, too. Neither was true. There were some site shenanigans in the past, and it is probably good that people are keeping watch, but it can come on a bit strong when you are new.
