Why is there an effort to limit the mass culling though? People have limited time…why spend all that effort on the off chance you have that rare one in a million horse that goes from Claimer to freak? As of now allowance and below are not worth the limited time I have to invest in the game, and if I had to allocate time to horses that barely bring in any money or enjoyment, I would’ve quit by now.
Agree with this 100%. I get the fee to go to AJ, but I like knowing what I am most likely going to get the most out of and it also can help me decide what to do with the mare the following year. (Plus I do love the instant gratification of getting to see their current level).
Rather than eliminate gallops, there has been some discussion about increasing the Greener Pastures (GP) fee for yearlings -- no fee changes would be made for race age horses. That is, to avoid this additional cost, you could just delay culling until these yearlings become 2 YOs.

I was supportive of this idea because I want to keep gallops. But I do not do mass culling of my yearlings so the fee increase would not impact me.

Since you both do mass culling of yearlings, what is your opinion of this option? That is, gallops would continue in their current form but there would be an increase in the GP fee for yearlings?

I rarely send to Greener Pastures, so increasing the GP fee for yearlings wouldn't really change the way I play at all. I just throw them in sales for $1 in case anyone else wants to take a chance on them, and then the ones that don't sell that I still don't want to race I just retire when they turn 2. But I also do still race a lot of claimers/solids/productives.

Wouldn't mass culling happen anyway after worktimes

Just chipping in to say that workout times can be mega deceptive. I train my horses a little harder than most and as such, they tend to run quicker workout times. I have had plenty that look freak or stakes level but are actually a level below that.

I'm glad workout times and gallops aren't precise, adds that realism

Immediately made me think of a mare I have here. She won 6 races between 4 and 7.5 furlongs and she is the SLOWEST trackworker I’ve ever sat on. If I didn’t get her given to me free, I would never ever have taken her on based off her morning workouts. Then she’d turn up at race day and lead sprint fields. Will be interesting to see if her daughter is the same or not!

So you make it more expensive to get rid of horses deemed not worth keeping .. so that depresses too much breeding which depresses the number of horses to train , spend money and points in,etc.. I think it’s fairly understood that within each gallop cutoff there is a range of ability that can even overlap but there won’t be any claimers doing enough to train , equip, vet, buy companion animals , etc worth what would be a total waste if money on.. so gallops are useful as long you understand what they tell you but more importantly what they don’t tell you before the horse hits the track and if you do then your disappointment over what a certain gallop rating horse does is not the fault of the game
