How does AJ get listed as...

Post by Stormy Peak »

a breeder of a horse?

I've seen this a few times, but never asked about it. Just curious, as I thought AJ was just a barn that was automatically run to accept horses and then delete some at the end of the year, and not to select 'this mare and that stallion' to create a horse.

It distinguishes those from Steward-breds.

Thanks for the info.
I guess I missed the memo on it, given I rarely purchase from auctions, and those are usually dispersal ones.

I'm curious about how the sim calculates breeding (that usually requires a 3 gen pedigree) when there's gaps.

I'd think it's like any other weighted average calc. Sire numbers * randomness weighted by dam * randomness weighted by each of the foals 2nd generation* randomness. Something in this realm.

Yes but a weighted average has to have a starting number to weight.

Let's pretend that a 1.5 multiplier is an exceptionally high multiplier for a parent's contribution to a foal pedigree. If the dam slot in a mare-less pedigree has a "0" (because there is no mare), then 1.5 x 0 is still zero.

However, if the overall average rating in the division is around a 15 and that same dam slot has a 10 and gets a 1.5. multiplier...well now that slot's hit the average. That's not great, especially where an "average" mare can also get a lucky result and go higher, but it's can still be worthwhile to use these lines where they bring in other benefits. (These are just illustrative examples, I don't suggest the weighted results have changes this extreme).

We have high value GP stallions with missing mare information in their pedigrees that still manage to turn out decent foal stats. That would suggest that the sim is compensating for their missing numbers in some way.

We have daughters or foals of those same stallions that tend to be "disappointing" to their owners (in the breeding department). That would suggest that the compensation isn't consistent in how it's applied.

Just knowing _in general_ what's happening (without being told the specific calculation occurring or the exact numbers being used) can help everyone make better breeding decisions.

We know (in general) that the holiday mares and foals aren't amazing. They used to be but it resulted in a lot of resentment and the Steward has toned them down. As a player who has tried selecting for the adult mares in my breeding program (because the TBs tend to be distance versatile as well as have some steeplechasing ability), it would be nice to know if I'm dooming my foals to actual "zeros" in their pedigrees or if there's some number that's being substituted that's still work-able.

While real breeders don't know the exact information represented by the hidden stats on our sim horses, they can be reassured that their foals aren't missing chunks of genetic material - because the foals are alive and breathing ;).
