Where it all began

Post by Entry Clerk »

I have spent years of my life thinking about racing, racing and racing.
This is a YouTube link which someone posted, it shows the first horse racing game I played age nine.
The graphics are very Simesque but you gotta love the seahorse shapes.

This was the first solely for racing game I played.

I’ve been playing online SIM horse games since I was 12(?) though. I always “specialized” in Dressage Arabians, Racing Thoroughbreds and Arabians. 😉 having to sit on Arabians here for an extra year is why I never really got into them (their dramatic butts are my fave, I’ve owned 1.5 in real life)

There have been many different games along the way, but Equine Sense, and Impulsion SIM, also On The Bit were the ones I played the longest. The games got me into building websites as well as graphic design. Tried to make a career out of it, even went to post secondary…but in true ADHD fashion after turning it into a job I learned to hate it.

After kids I didn’t have time to keep up with those games anymore, it was a lot of compiling and keeping track of your horses show/race results yourself (I fell REALLY behind) and that’s when I found this SIM!

I’ve also dabbled in some other automated games but they’ve never kept my attention long. I love genetics so Horse Reality was a favourite for a while but it has some MAJOR game economy issues, also really requires real money to be enjoyable. It’s extremely difficult to get started these days, the people who have continued to play since beta have hundreds of millions of dollars. Stud fees are higher than the player’s starting account, and good horses sell for millions.

For phone games I enjoyed Rising Star (which seems to annoyingly require you to spend money to not be boring, but the racing is fun), but I absolutely love Pocket Stables 🤣 it’s pay upfront (I think $7CAD ish) and then no other money required after.

I loved Quarterpole on DOS. There was a later version but I had some sort of compatibility problem with it and was bitterly disappointed that I never got to play it.

I also played, helped/managed and/or built several text based randomiser run games. Learned enough PHP to build databases into my websites. Joined here when I was 17 and within 2 years it was the only one I was still playing. Now I’m 33. I doubt I could even build a website now. It’s all changed a lot!

I played Track King as well but got tired of the limited amount of horses. The only thing I liked about Track King was the advanced race viewer. The league thing sucked in my opinion.

My first horse racing game had a small cardboard track with slots for moving the 5 colored plastic horses: Jet Pilot, Dark Star, Swaps, Needles, and Tim Tam. A spinner was used to determine which horse to move. Horse racing in the USA was extremely popular back then. The Kentucky Derby was the biggest sporting event of the year.

Trophy Horse. I wonder if Jeff, the owner, has ever recovered from the nervous breakdown we players caused him to experience?
Needless to say, the game is but a memory.
