I think I done with Subway.

Post by Stormy Peak »

So for a long time, I have treated myself to a Subway sandwich - about 3 to maybe 4 times a year. I usually get a footlong, and have it cut into thirds, so I get a lunch, dinner and a lunch from it.

I always buy an Italian herb, ham, with Swiss cheese, toasted. I get lettuce, onions, olives and bell peppers on it, with just one line of mayo and one line of brown/spicy mustard. I don't like a lot of mayo or mustard covering up the taste of the sandwich.

A few yeas ago Subway discontinued the brown/spicy mustard. So I either go for the yellow mustard or none and put some brown/spicy mustard on the sandwich when I get home.

Then last year... No more Swiss cheese. I mean...really...ham and swiss is a classic combo.
Provolone is available but I think it's a kind of bland cheese, and the cheddar... nope. I like cheddar, but I use it on a lot of other home made sandwiches.

Like I said, I go to Subway as kind of a treat for myself upon occasion, because I just don't have a lot of money to be spending on take out foods.

Four months ago I bought one of what I considered the downgraded version...yellow mustard and provolone on it. And it cost me about $9.00

I was with my sister yesterday and she offered to buy me a sandwich because she wanted a sub sandwich for lunch.
We ordered, she knew what she wanted, and I knew what I was going to order, so neither of us looked up at the menu board behind the counter.

We both just about $#!^ when the amount came up on the register.
$30.00 !!!! I ended up helping my sister pay for the sandwiches.

Subway's footlongs with nothing extra added, like extra cheese or meat, went from $8,00 to $15.00 in the course of 4 months. I'm not sure, but I think too, they are slicing the ham Way thinner...i noticed when the worker was putting the ham on that it looked almost see-through.

Rant over. Kind of like my days of treating myself to a Subway sandwich that had ingredients I liked at a price I could afford a few times a year. :P

Wish I had made $20 @ hr. when I was in high school!

They are passing along increased employee wages onto consumers.

Like this has never happened before?

That was a California law. I live in Idaho, and yeah, I know the rest of the states are subsidizing the Subways in California now...as there is no other reason for this sudden and drastic increase in prices.

I think I read that in California a footlong is now around $17 or $18 dollars.

Given the prices... I probably would have just cut down to maybe 1 or 2 subs a year....but there's the 2 things I really liked on my ham sandwich that are gone too. I won't ever pay that much money when I can't get a ham and swiss with spicy brown mustard.
I just wish my sister and I had noticed the huge price increase on the menu boards.

They raised min wage in California, raised gas prices, raised food prices, increased min tip option on bills from 15% to 18% and 20%, charge both delivery and convenience fee if you order online (I remember back in the day delivery was free at many restaurants), but they never raised normal working class adult salaries for career jobs salaries.

Still fighting for that 4-5% raise every year. Only way to make more money is to find a new job lol

Im in San Diego, we have lots of great Mexican food, back when I was in my 20s used to go to any local taco shop and get a bean n cheese burrito easily for under $5 anywhere you go.

Now most places charge $8 or more. Saw a place a few weeks back charging $12.

We are talking refried beans, cheese and a tortilla haha
Are the beans now made of gold??

All you can eat pizza buffets and salad bar for $5 where I am from - gone now...not sure of cost as I do not live there anymore.

Maybe some of our Irish friends can tell us about the purity laws and how Subways can't even call it bread in Ireland because the amount of sugar in them!

end of day, inflation is coming for everyone... some countries come together and make sure to provide housing, food and medical....but I am doubtful here...but never know Americans can surprise every once in a while (like unpredictable mares!)

Prices everywhere is just insane now. I refuse to eat out. I am not paying for those useless workers demanding $20 and up wages yet providing the service of a $5 an hour employee.

Today, I went to the nearby Senior Center for lunch. For $2.50 (suggested donation), I received a large piece of "oven fried" chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, "country" vegetables, "fired roasted" corn salad, bread and butter, a banana, milk, lemonade, and water. The quality of the food was excellent. The portion sizes were so large that I took some food home. The price for my meal was insane -- that is, insanely low!

To all those who visit the Vegas Valley and leave so much of your money here, thank you for your "service" to seniors and others who benefit so much from your visit.

Our minimum wage here in Iowa is still $7.25 and a footlong at Subway is $15 - $17 depending on which one orders.

A friend and I ate there once in the last year-- I got a 6 inch chicken, drink, and cookie and paid $12. That's the last time I do that. I can eat at the Mexican restaurant in town and get a great meal that I can take leftovers home and eat for two days for that cost. Hubby stopped at McDonalds traveling last week and his usual 'value meal' was $4 more than it used to be.

We rarely get fast food anymore. We can support local restaurants for the same price, and get much better food. There's a fabulous sandwich shop a few miles from where I work that has excellent ingredients and a footlong sandwich there is more than a foot long, and costs $11-12. My husband and I can split one and have plenty of food for one meal, perhaps two. And it's so much better than Subway... plus the local places pay their workers more than the chain fast food chain places.

Don't blame workers who are finally getting closer to a decent wage in some states; blame companies who are pocketing record profits while their workers subsist on sub-standard wages. It's price-gouging, plain and simple.

This is true here in Pennsylvania too. Minimum wage is still $7.25, even McDonalds is charging an arm and a leg.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
