Yeah, I know I still have to finish awarding the prior contest, but (1) judging from the message board, the natives are getting restless awaiting next Monday, (2) I'm taking a "study" break if you will, from getting ready for my Supreme Court argument tomorrow morning (I'm so ready, it isn't even funny, but I feel obligated to KEEP preparing and try to figure out what questions I'm gonna get asked), and (3) helps me continue to reduce my stable size, so here goes:
This contest is limited to (1) Trial Park-eligible players, (2) Junior-High eligible players, and (3) players with a bankroll under $500,000 regardless of how long you've been playing in the SIM.
I'm giving out nine prizes. The winner gets first pick, second place second pick, and so on. The horses are:
Fightin' Tiger
Handsome
Juke Box Hero
Imperial Ballet
Middle East
Rule
Secrets Out
Sultry Day
The Wizard
How this works. PM me, either through the message board, or the game, your answers to the following questions. The person with the most correct answers wins, and ties, if any, will be broken based upon who answered first. If I end up with an eight-way tie, it may be that the slowest person is shut out, or I may toss an eighth horse into the pot, but if I do so, I'll add the horse before the winner picks. Do Not Post Any Answers In This Thread Doing so will disqualify you, and I reserve to right to cancel the entire contest, to be replaced by a different contest, for which you will not be eligible. If you find a question unclear, PM me, and I'll post the question and any clarification.
1. Who was the first filly to hit the board (finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd) in the Kentucky Derby?
Lady Navarre
2. Eight geldings have won the Kentucky Derby. Name them.
Vagrant, Apollo, MacBeth, Old Rosebud, Exterminator, Paul Jones, Clyde Van Dusen, Funny Cide
3. Name one of the jockeys who has ridden back-to-back Kentucky Derby winners. There is more than one correct answer to this.
Murphy, Winkfield, Turcotte and Delaoussaye are all correct answers
4. Name the last Derby Trial winner who won the Kentucky Derby.
Tim Tam
5. One Kentucky Derby winner was foaled in Montana. Name him.
Spokane
6. Name a Kentucky Derby winner, who sired a Kentucky Derby winner, who in turn sired another Kentucky Derby winner. There is more than one correct answer to this. I am looking for three Kentucky Derby winners' names, the first one will be the father of the second and the grandfather of the third (and the second will be the father of the third). If still confused, give a shout!
Correct answers were: Reigh Count-Count Fleet-Count Turf, or Pensive-Ponder-Needles
7. What year were the famed Twin Spires completed?
1895
8. The Kentucky Derby has historically been run in May, but there are two notable exceptions. Name one - I am looking for a year.
Correct answers were: 1901 or 1945. Interestingly, the Derby has been held on every day of the week except Sunday.
9. Three horses broke their maiden in the Kentucky Derby. Name them.
Buchanan, Sir Barton, Brokers Tip
10. What is the irony surrounding Dancer's Image's disqualification? This may sound a bit cryptic, but if you know precisely why he was disqualified, I think you won't have trouble coming up with the answer.
Dancer's Image was disqualified for having the substance "Bute" in his system, which was later legalized in Kentucky (and subsequent Derby winners have used the exact same drug, without penalty.
Good luck!

Update: I've received 16 entries as of this writing. Eight have answered every question correctly.
I'm going to add at least one horse, and as many as three, to the prize pool, which will be updated before the first place winner makes his or her pick. In addition, for players who submit a correct entry, but they weren't fast enough to win a horse, they will get a cash prize somewhere in the $10k to $25k range. The exact amount will depend on how many total correct entries there are.
So, if you haven't answered yet, and are debating entering this contest, I thought I'd clarify that it is still worth your time.
Also, as a reminder, if you win one of my homebreds as a prize, and somewhere down the road, you decide you are thinking of sending the horse to Greener Pastures, I will buy the horse back for $5k instead. Obviously, you are free to sell the horse, race the horse, keep it forever, so there is no obligation to send the horse back. This is only if you are thinking about going the Green Pastures route.
Thanks for reading, and good luck!

Are you talking about the Supreme Court in Washington, DC or one of the "State Supremes"?Laura F. wrote:...I'm taking a "study" break if you will, from getting ready for my Supreme Court argument tomorrow morning (I'm so ready, it isn't even funny, but I feel obligated to KEEP preparing and try to figure out what questions I'm gonna get asked)...

Kentucky State Supreme Court. I think it went well. I argue in front of the Sixth Circuit, up in Cincinnati, next month. Last week was the Kentucky Court of Appeals. My boss called these three arguments my Triple Crown this morning, and I laughed and laughed. Somehow, the real Triple Crown is way more fun (and less work!)

There were nine players who got every answer right (and another 10 who played, but got one or more incorrect). As stated in the rules, the tiebreak was how fast the answers were submitted. So, the order of picking a prize horse is as follows:
Ramey Furney (6:58 pm 2/12) - Juke Box Hero
Sean Furney (7:03 pm 2/12) - Middle East
Eric Hamme (8:10 pm 2/12) - Secrets Out
Bill Deitch (10:09 pm 2/12) - Imperial Ballet
A. R. Roberts (8:09 am 2/13) - Handsome
Kira Ravenwood (8:30 am 2/13) - Fightin' Tiger
Matt Woolfolk (10:48 am 2/13)
Rebecca Cass (12:34 pm 2/13)
Morgan Jarvis (4:12 pm 2/14)
You can check back periodically, but I'll also pm whomever is up next to pick, along with what horses are left. Congrats!

Aww, congrats to everyone! This was such a fun contest! I think I was off by just one.. but I, too, learned a lot from what I had to google. Thanks for sponsoring it, Laura!
