Here are the results from the judging of the haiku contest.

A few notes:
The judges were overall very complimentary to the haikus; as a result, I increased the number of awards.
After, I hear, quite a bit of debate, the judges decided to accept entries that didn’t meet the 5-7-5 profile, but to give them a slight penalty.
The judges felt much more confident and could more easily reach agreement with three categories than with the two, so I added an intermediate 2,000 point category.
Within each category, the order of names is random.

Congratulations to all!

* So as to get the GPs to the right people, I need to match “Forum names” to “Sim names” where they are not the same. If you’d rather keep the two separate and not post your “Sim name” in the Forum, then answer me using PM.

The following seemed pretty obvious, but let me know if I’m wrong: EmilyK = Emily Klein; Carolyn E = Carolyn Eaton; Ramrod = Ramrod Racing; IsaP = Isabella Penzance; RameyF = Ramey Furney

I could not identify JSmytheJones and Bleudot , so let me know.

I’m starting up a contest that hopefully will provide fun for all and prizes for many. For this contest, you need to rev up your creativity and write an original Haiku poem about the Sim and/or about horse racing in general.

The contest will be open for the next week. It will end at 11:00 am (Central Time) on Thursday April 3th - 9:00 am game time.

There will be two general categories – humorous (intended to make the reader chuckle if not LOL) and non-humorous (everything else).

Prizes: In each category the three best poems will receive 3,000 game points each and the next five best will receive 1,000 game points each. (That’s at least 16 prizes - so get in there!)

EVERYONE in the Sim is eligible (to be clear, that does include even the Steward) (and, Ronnie Dee, this particularly means you). Entries will be judged by judges entirely outside the Sim. (I will not vote, but I may well enter.) If the judges cannot agree, ties will be broken by enlarging the number of prizes for that category. I will give the judges a listing only of the Haikus; they will not see any of the other postings in the Forum. Everyone should enter! If you win and *REALLLY* do not want the game points, you can still revel in the fame and glory and direct me where to give the points.

Each person may submit only one Haiku to the contest and gets to specify whether it is to be entered in the humorous or non-humorous category. However, you can always replace your Haiku with another Haiku (in either category). You may post as many times as you wish; the last Haiku you post before the contest closes will be the one actually entered into the contest.

Okay, now, I guess many of you may be asking: What the heck is a Haiku?
The 300-year old Haiku Poem is a unique verse style – and requires no rhyming!
There are variations, but for this contest the following rules apply: Each poem has only three lines, totaling 17 syllables.
- the first line must be five syllables
- the second line must be seven syllables
- the third line must be five syllables
That’s really all you need for this contest – you can search the web if you want more background and/or lots of examples.
"Luck is my middle name," said Rincewind, indistinctly.
"Mind you, my first name is Bad."

Yay! I love writing haikus! This is for the nonhumorous category.

The crowd cheers loudly
As the horses thunder on
Towards the finish.

OK - it may need a little work, but for the non-humorous:

From the gate they fly
with hoofbeats loud and rhythmic
Roses for winning
I'm just here for the fun of it

I wrote this for my new horse, named: " Hurry Up! "

Humorous (I hope the horse's name is at least, lol)

Horse name "Hurry Up"

I must have misunderstood then... Because I thought it could rhyme. It just didn't need too. Oh well. Ah crap, yeah, I just reread the line I missed. I'll redo mine later.

Two years preparing,
Now ready for this moment.
They are at the gate!
As Ben Franklin once said, "In wine there is wisdom, in beer there is freedom, in water there is bacteria."
