Feature Freshman: Browncoat

Original article written by Cheri Stewart posted 5 months 3 weeks ago

Continuing our little review if freshman stallions this week (I'm a little behind.... busy having a baby and all that fun stuff!) We are going to move on to Browncoat! Set with a 30,000 dollar stud fee, this stud has a really impressive pedigree to go with his impressive racing career.
His sire, Can't Take the Sky (at stud for $45,000 currently) is the winner of the year 58 Stewards Cup Classic and Queen's Derby. His progeny have earned over 5 million in winnings, and he's got a pretty darn decent percentage if allowance to freak gallopers himself.
His dam, Addicted to Kisses, is a 6 figure earner herself. She won the Flamingo Oaks, Exotic Traveler Superstakes, and Wonderful Stakes, among others. She's also by Y55-Horse Hall of Fame, Y42-North American Horse of the Year, Y42-North American Champion Three Year Old Male, Heart of the Storm. So she's got a pretty darn good male line behind her too! In fact, both sides of her pedigree are jam packed with winners. And with only 6 actual runners, her progeny earnings of $2.3 million is more than a little impressive.
I know it seems odd to look at the parents of the horse were talking about here, but seeing as Browncoat is a brand new sire, it helps to see how both of his parents have produced. It's not foolproof, but it sure gives good insight into how he will likely perform as a stud himself.
Now, onto the man himself! Browncoat actually retired this year, so if you can afford the 30k, do it. Because if he ends up getting great offspring, it wouldn't shock me to see that fee rise, and rightly so! He was bred and is owned by Erin Sanderson. Out of 20 starts, he's won 10, placed in 3, and shown once. His most prestigious win came in the Year 64 Steward's Cup Marathon, where he put out a 99 speed figure, and took the race by three quarters of a length. He also won the Y 63 Midsummer Classic, Prefamagapes Stakes, Ever the Same Stakes, and Jet Ski Handicap... doesn't seem like he minded weather much.
As far as Dirt Routers go, I'd say this guy is going to be one of the best! He's won on sloppy and fast tracks, run against great horses and won, comes from a super bloodline, and will probably throw some great runners if bred to the right mares.
I look forward to keeping this series going! I hope you're enjoying it too. Til next time!
