Freshman Sires: Bolivar

Original article written by Cheri Stewart posted 5 months 3 weeks ago

Continuing with the freshman sires! This one's Bolivar. Fun story... I actually lived near a town called Bolivar in Missouri, so his name gave me a chuckle. For a horse that's racked up nearly $4,000,000 in winnings, his stud fee of $15,000 is MORE than reasonable! He's a six year old stud owned and bred by Bradley Davis. You're going to want to add him to your alert lists to breed to your turf route mares. Let's check out some of his stats!
Bolivar started 28 times, he won 10 of those starts, placed five times, and showed 5 times. His biggest wins were the Y61 Steward's Cup Branbury, Y62 Irish Derby, Y63 Japanese Spring Marathon, Y63 Cox Trophy, Y64 Ireland's Champion Stakes, and Y65 Canterbury Stakes. He definitely showed longevity, stamina, and was able to stick with tough (and younger!) company and win!
His sire, Valar (by Kementari, out of Perfect Match) was also a multimillionaire, Y59-South Pacific Champion Older Male, Y59-South Pacific Horse of the Year, AND Y58-North American Champion Male Turf Horse. He won several very prestigious races in his career, including the Stewards Cup Turf, Chicago Million, Melbourne Trophy, and Steward's Cup Bunbury. His progeny have racked up an incredible $21,000,000 and he has obviously passed on his longevity and ability to win internationally to his son. He's also currently standing at $25,000 himself!
Bolivar's dam, Goodnite Piper, is by Goodnite Goodnite, out of the Itoko mare Billie Piper. She never started but her pedigree speaks volumes of longevity. Her sire raced and won Graded Stakes, including the Los Campeones Turf, Hong Kong Champions Route, English St Leger... the list goes on and on... for SEVEN YEARS. Her dam, Billie Piper, only started 9 times, but only finished out of the money once, and was a Graded Stakes winner. Her progeny have earned over 3 million in winnings, so even though her career wasn't jaw-dropping, she proved to be a wonderful broodmare, who passed on the good genes! (HER sire, Itoko, was Y54-Horse Hall of Fame, Y41-European Horse of the Year, Y41-European Champion Older Male, and Y40-Asian Champion Three Year Old Male... so again, we have a pattern of multi-national greatness and an ability to win for multiple seasons.
In conclusion.... Bolivar looks like he's going to be a great stud! He's got a pedigree that continues to pass down coveted traits, he's at a more-than-reasonable price point, and I wouldn't mind having some of his colts myself.
