Analysis of SIM Generated Broodmares from Real-Life Horses

Original article written by Wc Lee posted 2 months 0 weeks ago

Every so often, the Steward holds an auction for SIM generated mares from real-life horses. For example, in Year 63, the Steward held an auction for 40 mares from the real-life horse Maclean’s Music.

The reason why these mares are introduced into the SIM is to increase the diversity of the horses.

The question is how good these mares are and should you buy a SIM generated mare in an auction?

I downloaded the data on all of the SIM generated broodmares that were introduced into the SIM between Years 45 and 55. I then downloaded the data from all the progenies from these broodmares that were 5 years or older (as of Year 66). I only looked at progenies that were 5 years or older to ensure that their racing careers were mostly over. I then compared the performance of these progenies with the progenies from all broodmares that were born between Years 45 and 55.

To determine the performance of the progenies, I looked at the best win from the progeny.

There were 190 SIM generated broodmares in the study and 1070 progenies that were bred from these broodmares. In the overall data set there were a total of 62,828 broodmares and 247017 progenies

Grade 1 Winners: 0.59% (overall), 2.43% (SIM generated broodmare)

Grade 2 Winners or better: 1.20% (overall), 3.74% (SIM generated broodmare)

Grade 3 Winners or better: 1.94% (overall), 5.42% (SIM generated broodmare)

Listed Stakes Winners or better: 3.53% (overall), 8.31% (SIM generated broodmare)

Allowance Winners or better: 12.93% (overall), 23.55% (SIM generated broodmare)

The SIM generated produced better progenies than did the entire broodmare population in the SIM.

From what I can tell, almost all (if not all) of the SIM generated broodmares are Blue Hens. In my study of progeny vs. Mare Goodness ratings, Blue Hens have a much higher chance of producing good/great progeny that any other type of broodmare.

Another advantage of the SIM generated broodmares is that they come with a completely different bloodline, so you do not have to worry about in-breeding restrictions in matching a SIM generated broodmare to a stallion.

In my opinion, you should definitely bid on a SIM generated broodmare. How much you should bid is dependent upon personal preference.

In a future article, I will compare the progenies of SIM generated broodmares to the Steward Bred broodmares.
