Relationship between Mare Gallops and Goodness Ratings

Original article written by Wc Lee posted 8 weeks 5 days ago

Recently there was a forum thread where people were debating the meaning of the trainer comments “Longer Career” and “Breeding Shed”. At the end, it was confirmed that “Longer Career” meant that the horse’s breeding ability was lower than the horse’s racing ability and that the “Breeding Shed” meant that the horse’s breeding ability was higher than the horse’s racing ability.

But is that the only relationship between breeding ability and racing ability?

I have found that there is a definite relationship between a Mare’s gallop rating and a Mare’s breeding rating or Mare Goodness rating.

I have collected the Gallop rating and the Goodness rating for every Thoroughbred mare that has been in an Auction Sale or Auction Lease for the last one and half years. I have also taken snapshots of the mares that have been for sale in the Player Sale pages and in the Game Sale pages.

In total, I have collected Gallop-Goodness combinations for over 11,500 mares.

Although 11,500 mares is a lot of horses, this data is not be representative of the SIM’s broodmare population.

Below is the breakdown of the Mare Gallops:

1.9% Freak (214 mares)
17.1% Stakes (1972 mares)
45.1% Allowance (5212 mares)
24.6% Productive (2840 mares)
6.1% Solid (705 mares)
5.3% Claimer (609 mares)

The number of Freak gallops is very under-represented. Most players will not sell or even lease their Freak galloped mares.

Similarly, but for different reasons, the number of Productives, Solids and Claimers galloped mares is also under represented. Most players will not bother to do run a Bloodstock Agent check on these lower galloping mares.

Still, this is all the information that is publicly available and gives us a general idea of the relationship between Gallops and Goodness ratings.

Of the 214 Freak galloped mares, this was the breakdown of Goodness ratings:

60.3% Blue Hen (129 mares)
20.1% Star Mare (43 mares)
19.2% Formidable (41 mares)
0.5% Unpredictable (1 mare)

My guess is that the actual number of Freak galloped mares that are Blue Hens is higher than 60.3%. I know that if I had a Freak galloped mare that was a Blue Hen, I would not sell or lease her.

There were 1972 Stakes galloped mares in the data set. This is the breakdown of the Goodness ratings:

36.3% Blue Hen (715 mares)
25.2% Star Mare (496 mares)
37.2% Formidable (733 mares)
1.4% Unpredictable (27 mares)
0.1% Some Potential (1 mare)

There were 5212 Allowance galloped mares in the data set. This is the breakdown of the Goodness ratings:

18.7% Blue Hen (973 mares)
29.3% Star Mare (1526 mares)
41.2% Formidable (2149 mares)
10.5% Unpredictable (549 mares)
0.3% Some Potential (15 mares)

There were 2840 Productive galloped mares in the data set. This is the breakdown of the Goodness ratings:

0.5% Blue Hen (14 mares)
16.2% Star Mare (460 mares)
48.2% Formidable (1369 mares)
26.0% Unpredictable (737 mares)
9.2% Some Potential (260 mares)

There were 705 Solid galloped mares in the data set. This is the breakdown of the Goodness ratings:

0.6% Star Mare (4 mares)
40.9% Formidable (288 mares)
32.9% Unpredictable (232 mares)
22.1% Some Potential (156 mares)
3.5% No Potential (25 mares)

There were 609 Claimer galloped mares in the data set. This is the breakdown of the Goodness ratings:

14.9% Formidable (91 mares)
33.3% Unpredictable (203 mares)
33.5% Some Potential (204 mares)
18.2% No Potential (111 mares)

What does this data mean? How do you use this data?

Although, this data is set is not representative, I use it when I am retiring a horse and contemplating whether to spend the SIM$10000 to have the Bloodstock Agent tell what type of Broodmare the mare is.

For all Freak galloped and Stakes galloped mares, I will automatically ask the Bloodstock Agent.

For Allowance galloped mares, there is a greater than 50% chance that the Goodness rating will be Formidable or worse. In this case, I only Bloodstock Agent check if the mare has a Breeding Shed comment or if the mare had a really good racing career.

For Productive galloped mares, I only Bloodstock Agent check if there is a Breeding Shed comment and I want to increase the number of mares in a particular division.
