James Brennan Stable Blog - Y67 Week 1

Original article written by James Brennan posted 2 weeks 6 days ago

Y67 – W1
Welcome to the Second Edition of the James Brennan Stable blog, for Week 1 of the Year 67 Season. I suppose the first thing to say is that it was NOT a good week, with 0-0-0 from 27 runners. We will speak about this below as well as the main news from the stable, which was the acquisition of several new horses.

Racing.

There wasn’t any huge hope for any big winners this week, but a 0% return on both wins and OTB is still disappointing. It seems the stable is still feeling the fitness effects of a year out of training/racing. I’d expect all the horses on their first runs of the season to show improvement in their next outings, a lot of horses will have to start earning their keep this season.
On specific runners, one to keep an eye on was The Grey Aeroplane, a homebred 3-YO entire chaser who was entered in a stakes bumper in Sweden. Unfortunately, he finished 9th in a 10-horse field with a speed figure of 74, finishing well behind winner Pukkins. A disappointing debut in high class company but expect this colt to break his maiden sooner rather than later.
Only three horses finished in the money this week, two by default, finishing last in small field races, with Desk Pad the only money winner not rounding up the field, finishing 4th in a 5-horse claimer. It could be a long season ahead.
We have 20 runners this week (W2), lets hope for some better results.

Breeding

A couple of editions to the breeding barn this week, most notably, the stables first stud, Leaps of Faith, a stakes winner bought for $25k. He won’t be a prolific stud by any means, but it is access to the Kilcreggan bloodline, a line this stable rates, and will hopefully help keep breeding costs down this year. A risk certainly but let’s hope he can produce some winners. He has already covered three of our mares, with the two fillies and one cold being the first of this year’s produce.
We did get our first “winner” of the year in Tiz the Diamond, a James Brennan bred All-Weather router who won an Allowance for Darat Ayam.

Acquisitions

Several horses were acquired this week in accordance with the plan for the year, including two Steward Bred fillies, The Wee Cat, a 1 YO Turf Router, and Dr Mix, a 2 YO Turf Router.
