Sea World Shark Devours All Comers in the Chicago Million

Original article written by Fanta Arcadia posted 11 years 1 week ago

Mike Eaton’s homebred son of Fish has always proved to be a tenacious and flashy colt with a ton of talent to back it all up in a small, black frame. While all eyes were on the fierce Monster, savvy veteran Something Wild, and the renowned If You Think; Sea World Shark was measuring his competition with cool indifference.

In the days before the race, Sea World Shark was poised to take a chunk out of the competition and while no one was paying attention to his horse, Mike Eaton would smile knowingly with a hint of mischief. The day of the race dawned bright and clear as the track would come up firm for the mile and a quarter event.

The six horses stood patiently in the gate as the assistant starters steadied their heads and pointed them down the long straight away. Monster threw his nose in the air and snorted imperiously as Something Wild didn’t bat an eyelash, he knew the routine by heart now. In a single instance of stillness the gates banged open and the field was sent away like a bullet from a pistol.

All broke well save for Monster who checked slightly, and it would be If You Think and Sea World Shark gunning for that early lead. Star Moment was a mere length behind the duo as Monster settled in fourth following the bad break. Something Wild was trailing Monster by nearly two lengths as Calgon ranged up beside him to bring up the rear.

Just three short furlongs into the race and Sea World Shark has edged If You Think out of his way and has taken command of this race. Yet If You Think is just three parts of a length behind him and well within striking distance. Star Moment trails little more than a length behind those two as Monster follows a length and a quarter behind him. Then it’s a long five lengths back to Calgon as Something Wild trails by a mere nose.

On the front end things haven’t simmered down a bit, in fact things are just heating up. As they round the turn Sea World Shark now has a length advantage over If You Think who is giving everything he’s got to close ground on the leader. They are followed by Star Moment, Monster, Calgon, and Something Wild who is bringing up the rear.

Yet it is all Sea World Shark in a show of brilliant speed as he defeats If You Think by a length and a quarter. If You Think finishes up second with a near three length lead over Star Moment, Calgon ranged up in fourth as Monster came up with no run today and faded back in sixth finishing almost a length behind Something Wild who was fifth.

Sea World Shark’s victory vaulted his earnings to $1,601,000 and 9 wins in 13 starts with two seconds. It has been a very good year for Mike Eaton and his homebreds and it only looks to get better. Sea World Shark’s next race will be the Everest Stakes going a mile and a half, Friday of Week 14. So far there are only three in the field, Sea World Shark included, but the only other big name in this race is If You Think who is looking to avenge his defeat in the Chicago Million.
