Hall of Fame - B Ball Dashin

Original article written by Nathan Klein posted 3 years 0 weeks ago

There was once a solid Dun mare with the simple name of B Ball Star. She would have eight foals during her broodmare career. However, she had her best success with her first two progeny. Although she couldn't recapture it afterword the two horses she made were both amazing. There was a colt and there was a filly. The colt was dark blue and the filly was light Perlino. But today we will talk about the colt. His name was B Ball Dashin.

He was a talented horse and a great looker. But you don't know for sure until you get them on the track. When he did it was impressive. He broke well letting Yoda Dakota lead by a neck early but by the final quarter of the half mile race he was in charge running on home to an easy 2 length victory.

Next up it was a non-winner of 2 which had only two other horses dare to challenge him. Driving Mama Crazy zoomed to the lead early as B Ball Dashin broke slowly. Driving Mama Crazy was a good 2 lengths ahead as they went into the final quarter. But with a big move, he picked it up. With 100 yards to go, he just got up to win by a quarter of a length. Next up was stakes company. He broke faster and by the end, he was the clear winner having an easy 1 length lead as he crossed the finish line for his third straight victory.

He was on a roll handling the half a mile distance with grace. So they tested how much further they could take him by putting him in the Steward's Cup Quarter's Futurity. It was one of the smallest Steward's Cup fields ever assembled with only three horses showing up. But this time Driving Mama Crazy got the jump on B Ball Dashin. B Ball Dashin did make up some ground but it was Driving Mama Crazy's race and he won by 1 1/4 lengths.

It would be only the start of their rivalry as they would face off another three times at the age of 3. B Ball Dashin took some long breaks between races as he made his debut at age 3 in the fourth week. It didn't go well as he was again well beaten in third behind Driving Mama Crazy. Five weeks later he went for start number two and this time he got back at Driving Mama Crazy as he broke slowly.

While B Ball Dashin started midpack and surged easily by to win by 1 1/2 lengths. But revenge was reignited as Driving Mama Crazy held off B Ball Dashin by 1/4 of a length next time out in the Mexico Fall Stakes. They would then not meet until the Steward's Cup. Both ran once on there own accord to get ready for their final match. Driving Mama Crazy finished fourth in his final prep and B Ball Dashin got up by a head defeating Bob Saget. They both broke well but the race was over for Driving Mama Crazy pretty early. He fell back and lacked any kick late while B Ball Dashin stayed in contention. Using his late-game speed he got up to win by half a length getting his first Steward's Cup victory.

At age 4 he would have to fight again this time against Bob Saget who would try but never succeed at beating B Ball Dashin. Although he did come close when the year began losing to B Ball Dashin by just a nose in the Dash Faster Stakes. B Ball Dashin then lost for the only time that year when he came second to Bbq by 3/4 of a length. He would never start the fastest but in the final quarter of a mile, he had more left than anyone else and would use it to accelerate past his rivals. First, he took the Fantastic Solo Stakes again beating Bob Saget but this time by a neck. Then he took the Grade 2 Diversity Classic where he was a clear winner in the stretch having time to open up 1 1/2 lengths at the finish. After the Marathon Mover Stakes, it was time for another run in the Steward's Cup Quarter's Classic.

He would break inward but be third early letting Duke Of London and Baycool set the pace as they lead by 2 lengths fighting for supremacy. But they tired out after the first quarter and B Ball Dashin made his move capitalizing on them tiring themselves out he caught up and won by a neck. He was now a duel Steward's Cup winner and Grade 1 winner. He would go on to take two Simmy's for his near-perfect record that year. Quarter Horse Champion Older Male and then Quarter Horse of the Year. But a horse's peak of ability only lasts for so long. Younger faster quarter horses were taking his place. B Ball Dashin ran five times as a 5-year-old. One of his regular opponents was a 4-year-old named Quarter Sunny who beat him four times that year. B Ball Dashin only got one victory and one second place finish. The rest were fourth-place finishes. His last win came in a title defense when he won his second Fantastic Solo Stakes in the absence of Quarter Sunny.

The former champ would then finish fourth twice and then was retired before the Steward's Cup as it was clear that a hat trick was not in reach. By the end of it, he had won 12 times from 20 overall starts and only finished off the board 3 times all of which were in his 5-year-old year. As a stud, he proved only decent having $7,485,230 in progeny earnings. He'd have 24 stakes winners but could only hit a single Grade 1 winning horse in B Ball Duke. Then 16 Sim years after his retirement and a year after his death the blue horse was posthumously inducted into the Hall Of Fame.
